FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Table Texting”

by Lisa Pagano
3rd - 12th Grade

"Table Texting" is a fun, interactive strategy you can use with any piece of text or topic. The key is to pose a higher-level question that encourages thinking among students. Students respond to the question in writing. The teacher or facilitator collects the papers and redistributes them. Students get to read other responses and reply. The process continues until all of the speech bubbles are completed. At the end, students get to read their classmates' responses. I have used this with success with my gifted students in grades 4 and 5. This can easily be adapted using any literary selection or subject.
This product includes the "Table Texting" template with teacher directions and suggested follow up activities.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Duke Ellington Biography, Assessment, Vocabulary, and Vocabulary Quiz”

by Mrs. O.
3rd - 5th Grade

Free!!! The vocabulary handouts were formulated from the beautifully written book Duke Ellington by Andrea Davis Pinkney. I then downloaded a biography off of PBS kids and created a 2 page test to go along with it. It is a great cold read to either teach highlighting skills or practice for standardized tests. There are 20 questions total (12 multiple choice, a timeline, and 2 open-ended questions. Several questions are related to sequence. Others are genre, vocabulary, inference, etc. Another idea would be reading the biography from the website and answering the questions.

Thank you for visiting Mrs. O's Rockin Resources! Pam Olivieri

FREE MISC. LESSON - “Standardized Test Motivation Slips”

by Nicole Rios
1st - 6th Grade

Last year, I used something similar (strips of construction paper) to motivate my students to buy-in to the standardized test. These are a lot cuter.

During the test, I just walk around and stamp, or place a sticker, on their slip if I see them using a good testing strategy. Students with ten stickers at the end of testing received a reward.

The kids were really motivated by it,and I really think it made a difference in the quality of their efforts on the test.

Enjoy and happy teaching!
