Classroom/Visual Arts/Science working together

by Art  Action - Laurie Carpenter

Grades 1-6 (easily adapted)

PROJECT OVERVIEW-PURPOSE: To provide the elementary student
with a unique printing experience. In Step #1, it is almost like a scientific experiment as they watch the color transfer from one paper to another. This process is so much fun to do!

The exciting and somewhat messy first step is then followed by group discussion, research, and interaction, AND THE EXCITEMENT OF DISCOVERY!

*When the project is dry, 3 QUIET independent seat work options are presented
to the children, to be completed as 3 additional projects in the days that follow, in the classroom or art room.

Co-ordination of art room with classroom, as the three follow-up  projects can be used
as classroom seat work.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “Social Skills Lesson: Birthday Party”

by Speech Paths
2nd - 5th Grade

This is an activity to help children understand appropriate social interactions at a birthday party. A cartoon scenario is presented that depicts children at a party. A short story orients students to the overall situation. Four sections follow, including: facial expressions and gestures, perspective taking, supporting friends, and respecting others. Students are guided to "put themselves in the shoes" of characters and fill in the thoughts bubbles of each. The black and white cartoon can then be individually colored.

by Sarah Peterson
3rd - 6th Grade

Wild, Wild West Careers: Frontiersman
Davy Crockett; The Alamo

This lesson is one in a series of 14 lessons on Wild, Wild West Careers. Each of the lessons covers the careers and information about the era as it relates to the career. The series will cover the United States during the 1800s, including events that contributed to Western Expansion. Each lesson can also be used individually.

In the early part of the 1800s, land west of the Mississippi River was complete wilderness. This land consisted of rivers, mountains, forests and prairies and was occupied by Native Americans and wild animals. The frontier was the name given to the wild and unfamiliar land that lay west of civilized America. A frontiersman was a man who hunted, trapped, and traded on the frontier. Many lived isolated lives, traversing the land, following rivers, and climbing mountains in search of beavers, raccoons, and bears - any animal whose fur could be sold.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - "Tripping Through Time"

Tripping Through Time

By Connie Casserly
Grades 6-12
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Connie

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - "Tripping Through Time"
In this 4-page Free activity, Tripping Through Time, students use their thinking and writing skills to reveal their understanding of the character, conflict and other elements of literature in the piece that they are studying through narrative writing.

As the character of their choice from the reading, they are transported to a totally unfamiliar time and geographic area. After researching this different time and place, the students will write a personal narrative comparing and contrasting both societies. Their responses must reveal the point of view of the character that they chose to personify, not their own.

The students’ completed writing will show their comprehension of the reading, of the material that they gathered in their research, and they will strengthen their higher level thinking skills.

LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - "Reeling in Readers With Magnetizing Hooks"

By - Connie Casserly
Grades 6-12

"Reeling in Readers With Magnetizing Hooks"
Students must learn to reel in readers with alluring hooks that grab the readers' interest.  In this FREEBIE activity,  Reel in Readers With Magnetizing Hooks, teachers prepare mini-lessons on creating this most important writing element.

In my blog: http://teachitwrite.blogspot.com/2013/03/writing-right-reeling-in-readers.html  I detail ideas for how, when and why teachers should offer mini-lessons on writing alluring hooks. Types of Hooks and Choosing the Right Words - both with explanations and examples - are two of the topics that I address.

Reeling in Readers With Magnetizing Hooks"
Five Types of Hooks
·         Anecdote
·         Description of person, place or object
·         Example
·         Stance on an issue
·         Startling fact or statement
·         Question

Choosing the Right Words
·         Strong concrete nouns and adjectives: help create clear mental pictures. They destroy
haziness, erase questions, and incite emotional responses. The use of sensory imagery
(sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing) lures readers. Every sentence should contain at
least one sensory imagery appeal.
·         Vivid verbs: Verbs are the backbone of writing. Without vivid verbs, writers’ words will
collapse. Verbs MUST combine the subject’s action plus his/her emotion while performing
this action.

Reeling in Readers With Magnetizing Hooks"
Mini-Lesson Ideas
A. Warm-ups – Three lesson ideas
B. Write Now Moments – Two lesson ideas

This activity is an engaging way to lure students into wanting to write and to keep them writing. Download this FREE product from http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Activity-Writing-Reel-in-Readers-With-Magnetizing-Hooks-623112

Isn't it time for a Write Now Moment in your classroom?

Spring Bouquet - an "Easy - art" Picking Flowers Craftivity

Language arts - Classroom - Visual Arts - Science -Home School

by Art Action - Laurie Carpenter

Grades 1st - 4th

This lesson plan will provide the elementary student with a fun spring-summer art, language arts,
and science experience.

Group research, discussion, and sharing of past experiences is a necessary part of this lesson.

Research books are suggested to coordinate with the PRINTED PATTERNS, with basic lesson
plan and directions.

The perfect motivation, if possible, is a walk in the woods or back yard, picking flowers. If this is not possible, then observing flowers in the grocery store, or flower and science books will provide the research.

In the lesson plan, I also suggest various stories that will set the "spring mood"; the best are ones that the students are able to help read out loud.  Group interaction always adds to involvement and motivation!

FREE "SPRING AND SUMMER THINGS" EASY-ART MONO-PRINT

Classroom -Visual Arts-Science-Language Arts

1st - 6th grades

by Art Action - Laurie Carpenter

This elementary art lesson plan provides the student with a fun, mono-printing experience related to the
"growing and crawling" seasons of spring and summer. The project also acts as a science or classroom project as it relates to the environment.

The experience teaches the children a basic art skill of printing, as it exposes them to an understanding of the meaning of "symmetry" as it is applied to nature.

Quiet seat work time is provided, as the students are able to spend time researching in various reference books(science) or reading spring stories(language arts), as they acquire knowledge of the appearance of the items they wish to use in their mono-print visual arts experience. Children can sketch numerous items for several days in preparation - of course, keeping in mind that the object must be symmetrical and a front view, for it to work out in the fold over print.

The lesson plan gives suggestions for an enjoyable motivation, preparation, and presents  a detailed step by step procedure to be followed.

Incredible Critique Forms and Rubrics: Twelve Individual and Group Writing Assessment Handouts

Incredible Critique Forms and Rubrics: Twelve Individual and Group Writing Assessment HandoutsIncredible Critique Forms and Rubrics: Twelve Individual and Group Writing Assessment Handouts

These lessons and activities have been effective with regular, Honors and A.P. English students as well as with SPED students in grades 7-12. The Self-Assessment Sheet: Writing and the Quarter Writing Progress Self-Assessment are great ways to help students accept ownership for their writing and the process that they choose to follow to complete their work. Not only will these activities enable them to strengthen their writing, but they will talk like writers, too.

If we want our students to develop confidence in themselves as writers, we must Show Them the characteristics and standards of strong writing, Help Them to see these strengths in their own writing as well as in others' words-authors they have never met and their peers- through critique sessions and then Let Them revise and develop their writing to reflect their understanding and skills.
