Roll and Calculate - A Math Game Using Positive and Negative Numbers - $3.25

Roll and Calculate is a hands-on Algebra math game designed to practice the addition and subtraction of positive and negative numbers.  Two players take turns rolling two dice numbered 1-6 and then add or subtract the numbers based on the placement on the game board.  The answer must be agreed upon before the next player takes his/her turn.  This game is easily made more difficult by requiring the players to use dice numbered 5-10.

Then read three articles about cool kid inventors and do the inventions activities to pique student interest.

Have students choose their invention to research and begin the research phase. 
Complete the ”Awesome Inventions Organizer” by researching my assigned invention using a variety of resources including online encyclopedias, nonfiction books, history textbooks, biographies, educational videos and websites.
Present your PowerPoint and the model of your invention to the class.

This is a 21 question (many questions with multiple points) scavenger hunt where students use their reporting skills to find answers to questions about the First Amendment, the Code of Ethics for the Society of Professional Journalists, information about famous and infamous journalists and much more. It's a great way for students to learn about the rights of professional and, importantly for them, student publications.

Students must learn to reel in readers with alluring hooks that grab the people's interest. In this FREEBIE activity, teachers prepare mini-lessons on writing hooks.

This project reflects my top three goals for my students: 
1. To teach them to think
2. To teach them to express themselves verbally and in writing, and 3. To prepare them for the world outside of high school.

It incorporates reading and viewing comprehension and analytic writing. Students choose a theme from twelve universal motifs that I give them. Next, they spend three months reading books and taking notes on them. After that, they make connections between their reading and various other sources, from current events to poetry, short stories, movies, lyrics, museums, etc. 

Also, it is an excellent vehicle to help them to understand the connections between school studies and life outside of high school. 

This R lesson and activities duet will Revive your students motivation dulled by February's Repetitive grayness.

Banned Book Week -  September 21-27, 2014

Celebrate reading, writing and thinking while you hook your students into Banned Book Week. Here is an engaging product for you to use during this observance of the right to read, or any time during the school year. As students explore various facets of book censorship in schools, they will become more proficient in their reading, critical thinking and writing skills and will gain knowledge about this subject. Whether they choose to investigate the legal, historical, moral or societal aspects of this issue is up to each individual student and his/her personal interest in this topic.

In order to illustrate the points for book censorship in the schools, students will read a frequently banned or challenged novel, either from the included list, or a choice of their own. Next, they will research when, where and why it was challenged or banned. In the last part of the paper, each student will develop his/her opinion on whether the book should be banned or restricted, using points from the paper to support his/her conclusion. Students will follow the style sheet of the teacher’s choosing.

The three pages of Teachers Notes will help you customize this project for your students' skills, abilities and learning styles. 

Students are often shocked when they find out that some of their favorite books have been banned or restricted in schools. With this project, they can explore the Who, What, When, Where and Why so many popular texts read in schools have been challenged. A Parent Approval Form  where students get their parents' permission to read the book that they chose is included.
