This product focuses on composite areas and discovering the distributive property of multiplication over addition related to the area of a rectangle. In both activities students will learn that area is additive.
Detailed teacher notes provide a way to introduce the distributive property by the teacher modeling rectangles using square tiles. Students will complete a handout using tiles and/or using the grids provided. They will discover that a x (b+c) = a x b + a x c as they examine areas of various rectangles.
The second activity deals with composite areas. Students will decide how to divide the composite figure into rectangles and then find the sum of the areas of the rectangles. This will be the area of the composite figure. There is a real world application of finding the area of a composite figure included.
