FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Close Read "A Volcano Erupts" (Informational Text)”

by Talented in Third
3rd - 5th Grade

Close Read A Volcano Erupts

This product will help your students learn close reading habits with the help of a free article from ReadWorks.org. The questions included will help you conduct a close reading for this informational text.

*****************************************************************************

It covers all of the Reading Informational Text Standards for the Common Core Third Grade Standards. It is a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, and extended answer questions. The questions are provided, which takes the guesswork out of close reading and allows you to integrate close reading into your daily schedule.

In order to do the reading, just print the article and questions for each student or group and start annotating this informational text. This would work especially well in an interactive notebook, so students can reference it in the future while doing close reading. This will also work as a class read, projected and read together, if printing is limited or not desired, with questions printed or discussed as a class.

*****************************************************************************

The close read questions included correlate to ReadWorks.org’s “A Volcano Erupts” . This passage is all about how a volcano erupts. It is written at lexile 410 level. This makes it an easier individual read or a good small group read for third graders who may struggle with nonfiction. It can be found at: A Volcano Erupts.

For this close read, I used both pages of the text. If you are interested in other close reads, please see my other nonfiction Close Reading products.

This is all aligned to the Third Grade Common Core Standards, with a focus on asking questions that are aligned to the level of complexity the standards require. Many times, close readings will focus on the standards, but not at the right level of complexity, meaning students are answering questions below the level they need to. This practice doesn't actually help them develop the skills they need. These questions will help you to focus on asking the right questions, so the practice will match the end of the year assessment, as well as helping your students develop the needed skills to do well in the future.

FREE MATH LESSON - “Freebie Reading Grids Poster - You Crawl Before You Walk”

by Down Under Teacher
1st - 4th Grade

I was taught this saying by a student when I taught Grade 6:

You crawl before you walk.

We use it to help us remember to read the x-axis before the y-axis i.e. when you crawl you are horizontal so you read the horizontal axis first, you are vertical when you walk so you read that second. I thought it was pretty genius and I've been using it ever since.

I’ve made up 2 posters – one with numbers and one with letters along the x-axis.

I hope you enjoy using it.

Please consider leaving feedback if you like this freebie or following my blog Down Under Teacher.

Yes and No Questions Kit

by Kathy Babineau

This Yes/No Questions Kit contains a variety of materials and a systematic way to target and track progress on answering yes and no questions. Many of my students with significant language disorders and children with autism have difficulty answering yes/no questions.

Level 1: Targets the most basic yes/no questions related to a child's wants and needs. Suggestions and visuals for yes/no to use in small group or 1:1 instruction and for display throughout the classroom are included.

Level 2: Targets yes/no questions to identify known items. Included in this level are suggestions for implementation as well as possible modifications, visually appealing yes/no question cards, receptive/expressive vocabulary screener and data collection sheets.

Level 3: Targets yes/no questions about general knowledge and opinion. Included in this level are suggestions and ideas for implementation, visual yes/no question cards and data collection sheets.

I sincerely hope this product is helpful to you and to your students. Please be sure to leave feedback to receive credit towards future TPT products.

FREE End-of-the-Year Math Reflection Questions

How can we promote a growth mindset in math?

The end of the school year provides a natural opportunity for students to reflect on the year and the work they have done. Promoting self-reflection not only encourages students to look back at failures but also to celebrate them, providing us with an opportunity to promote a growth mindset in our students and set them up for success for the next school year. This classroom freebie includes 8 self-reflection cards that promote a healthy mathematical mindset. The discussion cards can be used round-robin style, as a whole class discussion activity, or as journal prompts. Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of the pack.
