FREE MISC. LESSON - “25 Interactive Web Sites for Virtual Field Trips”

by Christopher Mitchell
Kindergarten - 12th Grade

Virtual field trips provide students with opportunities they may not get to experience otherwise.

Where else can you "take a trip" to see the Sistine Chapel, the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, or the African grasslands -- all in one day?

These tools may also challenge students to think critically about the places they visit. For example, a virtual trip to Pompeii requires students to consider the quality of life in an ancient city. A trip to Chichen Itza will allow them to appreciate and question the Maya's design decisions. Simply, virtual field trips can spark your students' interest and motivate their learning in a specific content area.

The following websites are worth considering for virtual field trips. Some are built as all-inclusive virtual trips with text and audio; others provide only imagery which can be adapted to fit the needs of a lesson.

Civil Rights Milestones Webquest

Students will gain knowledge about the Civil Rights Movement and its influence on the federal government by completing an internet-based worksheet. The Civil Rights Milestones Webquest uses a great website created by PBS called Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Movement 1954-1985.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/eyesontheprize/milestones/index.html

The webquest contains forty-seven questions that are broken up into fifteen Civil Rights milestones/events. The Civil Rights Milestones Webquest is a great way to explain the active role the Civil Rights Movement had on influencing the Supreme Court. This webquest is great for a unit on Civil Rights, the Supreme Court, or government. Most students will finish this webquest within a class period. An answer sheet is included for the teacher.

LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - Activity: Tying it All Together

Language Arts Activity - Tying it All Together

By: Connie Casserly
Grades 6-12

Activity: Tying it All Together
Well-constructed stories build durable structures, be they short pieces or novels. To do so, authors use the elements of literature for the framing, the finish work and the decorations. Each student's level of knowledge forms his/her understanding and creates this person's own comprehension home.

This FREE 10-page activity, Activity: Tying it All Together, offers teachers 8 lessons - one each for Character, Plot, Conflict, Setting, Theme, Symbols, Point of View and Closure. Each activity supports Common Core and/or basic state-mandated standards.

Depending on each student's skill, ability and understanding level, teachers may choose to have their charges complete one, some, or all of the activities. When all are completed, students will advance their understanding of each aspect of Bloom's Taxonomy: Remember/Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate and Create. This enables them to develop their higher level thinking skills, a crucial aspect of learning.

Teachers may opt to use these open-ended activities for
·         individual or group activities during the study of an element
·         story/novel pre-assessment reviews
·         reinforcement in needed areas after the assessment
·         Teacher-choice lesson
Understanding how the elements of literature create resilient structures empowers students to build sturdy academic homes. This grasp also adds depth to comprehension and expansion to higher-level thinking skills that will produce lifelong learners.

How and why to use debates in the classroom.

There's very little that gets my kids more engaged and excited in the classroom as my Climate Change Debate. The debate focuses on the idea of human-man/natural climate change. Students have to argue whether we are responsible for the current situation we find ourselves in or whether it's a natural process that we have little to no control over. It's multifaceted as students are required to research then present their findings in the form of a debate. What I do to really spice things up is not tell them which side they will be arguing until the day of their presentation. That way, they need to gather their points and get a really good grasp of both sides of the issue. This is the key as my goal is to get the kids to realize that they need to come to their own conclusions about everything (scientific and other) only after they have thoroughly researched and thought about both sides of the issue. This is an essential skill they will need for the rest of their lives no matter what they want to do or become. This is also an opportunity to practice and refine critical thinking and research skills as well as provide an chance for them to utilize their own devices in the classroom. This assignment is suitable for many grade levels and can easily be altered to fit most subjects. It's a chance for your students to learn at their own pace and they really enjoy it. You will see a different side to many of your kids as their competitive spirit comes out.

Being Colour Blind - What is it? Are you color blind? Read and take the test.

color-blindness-simulator-e

Please pay attention as there will be a test when you are done. The tricky thing about colour blindness is that many people don't know they are colour blind until they get tested (40% of colour blind pupils currently leaving secondary school are unaware that they are colour blind - http://www.colour-blindness.com/general/prevalence/).  Why would they?  They naturally assume that what they have seen all their lives is correct just like the rest of us.  My optometrist told me once that he was doing an eye exam for a person wanting to become a police officer who was severely dismayed to hear that he was colour blind and therefore, could not pursue his dreams.

Red Green Colour Blindness is caused by a gene on the X chromosome therefore, since males have 1 X and 1 Y while females carry 2 X's, this issue is predominately found in males (7-10% of the overall population) and is very rarely seen in females.  For these people, they cannot see red and green light.

red green red green 2

Blue Colour Blindness is equally unlikely for both males and females as the deficient gene is found on chromosome 7 which is not sex-linked.  The issue is caused by a mutation in the gene which prevents the person from seeing blue light.   In both these cases the problem isn't as straight forward as not seeing blue, red or green light.  If what they are looking at contains these colors, they will not be seen.

Want another explanation?  Here's an excellent video and it's only 1.5 minutes long.

Task Card Review Games - How to utilize them more effectively in your classroom

Task Cards
Not too long ago I had no idea what a task card was or how it could effectively be utilized in the classroom.  I did some research and what I found was that task cards were simply worksheets, broken down into individual questions posted onto cue cards and I wasn't really that impressed.  I started thinking about what I could do to make task cards into an engaging, high energy review game. Since then I've started amassing a diverse supply of activities which are listed below.

These Task Card resources are unique. They can be utilized in a clue gathering, puzzle solving, highly active and engaging activity and/or as an alternative to worksheet review in an individual or group setting.  These activities provide 45 minutes of high energy, competitive engagement that sneaks in a lot of review even for those students who are usually against such things.

Elementary Mathematics: Area and Perimeter of Polygons Word Problems, Converting between Decimals, Fractions and Percentages, Decimals - Four Basic Operations, Multiplication and Division Word Problems & Fractions

High School Mathematics: Solving Quadratic Equations, Polynomials - Binomials and Trinomials & System of Linear Equations

Science: Space - The Study of the Universe, Biology: Cells and Body Systems & Chemistry - Atoms, Compound Naming and Chemical Reactions
