FREE MATH LESSON - “Reading a Tape Measure Notes and Worksheet Applied Geometry 1.1”

by Grasshopper Mathematics
8th - 10th Grade

Teach your students a vital life skill with this 2-day Applied Geometry mini-unit sample!

Looking for a high-engagement, low-prep way to kick off your Applied Geometry course? This 2-day introductory unit sample focuses entirely on the practical art of reading a tape measure to various fractions (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 inches). Perfect for high school math students, vocational/CTE programs, or remedial math classes where real-world application matters most.

This resource is designed to bridge the gap between abstract fractional concepts and the tangible skills students will use in DIY projects, trades, and everyday life.

🔍 What’s Included in This Sample?

    • Notes on reading a tape measure (1-page)
    • 2-pages per day worksheets (total of 4-pages of work)

⚡ Features & Benefits

    • Scaffolded Layout: The notes are carefully scaffolded to ensure all learners—regardless of their starting math confidence—can master the tick marks on a tape measure.
    • Real-World Context: Shifts geometry from abstract shapes to concrete, hands-on spatial awareness and measurement accuracy.
    • Versatile Design: Perfectly aligns with collaborative frameworks like Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) or works beautifully as a standalone interactive notebook addition.
    • Zero Prep Needed: Just print the worksheets, grab a few tape measures, and you are ready to teach!

📐 Skills Covered:

    • Understanding the hierarchy of tick marks on a standard imperial ruler.
    • Simplifying fractional measurements on the fly (e.g., recognizing why 4/8 is 1/2).
    • Reading tape measure increments up to 1/16 of an inch with precision.

Designed for middle and high school, this tool clearly defines expectations across four domains—effort, behavior, preparation, and deliverables—to foster a transparent, accountable, and high-engagement classroom. Whether teaching in-person or online, this data-driven resource makes communicating with students and parents effortless.

How many times has a parent asked, "Why did my child get a C in participation?" This rubric is your answer. It moves participation from a vague concept to a clear set of actionable criteria. With its four-tier measurement scale, students can visualize exactly where they are succeeding and where they need to grow.

How this rubric saves your "brain space":

  • Automated Data Tracking: Use the Excel version to let the spreadsheet do the heavy lifting. It automatically calculates percentages for your gradebook and record-keeping.
  • 100% Customizable: The Microsoft Word version allows you to tweak the language to perfectly match your specific classroom culture and school norms.
  • Student Accountability: Don't just hand it out—ensure they understand it. Use the included comprehension quiz to verify that every student knows exactly how they are being assessed.
  • Parent-Teacher Transparency: This rubric acts as a professional bridge during conferences, providing clear evidence of a student's engagement levels.

What’s in the Box?

This grading toolkit includes:

  • Fully Editable Word Document: Customize the four domains (Effort, Behavior, Preparation, Deliverables) to fit your needs.
  • Data-Driven Excel Spreadsheet: Automate your grading and track student progress over time.
  • Comprehension Quiz: A follow-up assessment to ensure students have mastered the rubric's criteria.
  • Four-Tier Scale: A clear ranking system that identifies areas for improvement.
  • Digital & Print Ready: Use it for physical classrooms or as a digital tracker for online learning.

Targeted For Your Classroom

This participation rubric and engagement tracker is a vital tool for 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade teachers of all subjects. It is an exceptional resource for secondary ESL/ELL classrooms and Special Education (SPED) settings where clear, scaffolded expectations are essential for student success.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “BAT Theme Digital Papers, Frames, Clip Art”

by Growing Smart Readers
Pre-Kindergarten - 12th Grade

Free Bat Papers Swoop in to grab these bat papers and frames for your bat-related products. Great for designing covers, or adding a little fun to your worksheets and other creations.

8 Bat Happy Colors
yellow, blue, purple, orange, green, tan, multi-colored, and black/white

8 background papers - 12 x 12
8 background papers - portrait orientation
8 frames - white filled - portrait orientation
8 frames - transparent center - portrait orientation
1 solid black bat (silhouette)
1 solid gray bat (silhouette)

Total: 34 images in 300 dpi png

You will also be able to create products or files in landscape orientation with the 12 x 12 papers, and by adding a solid white shape in front to create your own frames in landscape orientation.

You will find that these bat pattern papers are flexible in png format for re-sizing and layering on another colored bat print or solid color. These would look spook-tacular layered with some of your other favorite Halloween digital papers.

The bats are extra fun images to fly around your frames and papers. They are fun appliqués to accent the frames.

Tip: you can recolor the bats to create contrasting colors, too! Just go to format with your bat already in PowerPoint or word --and go to recolor. For example, why not have purple bat swooping over a corner on a green frame?

This clip art is copyrighted and cannot be resold, or shared. No derivatives can be made to sell. Thanks very much for following these terms. Abiding by these terms is greatly appreciated. Be sure you know how to extract the files from the zip folder. Super easy. Please ask me if you have a question or a problem. I'm happy to help.

Thanks a lot for your interest!
