PARCC Practice - High Quality Questions For Grades 3-5

By: Greg Jusinski
3rd-5th Grade

I am excited to bring this PARCC bundle pack to you.  I created a product that will allow you to expose your students to the rigor and language of the PARCC. The problems in this bundle pack are presented as problem of the day and are great for discussions. They can be used as assessments, homework, some have even used them as a passport activity! You get all of the math CCSS included in this pack. I have used these in my classroom for the past few months and my students have greatly enhanced their math skills, changed their thinking, and are now justifying and modeling their work...a teacher's dream if you ask me!

The best part is that this pack also informs the teacher about certain aspects of the PARCC, such as the different question types, the language they use, and the fluency timed section. If you click the picture below it will take you to the PARCC Math Bundle at my TPT store. I also have a freebie if you'd like to try it out!

Check out some testimonials from other teachers:

"It's that time of year & thank heavens for this product! Up until now, the only resource out there that looked like PARCC was PARCC! Not even textbooks or sample tests offer the same level of questioning to which students are exposed. This bundle has so many uses: spiral review, test prep, higher level thinking, centers, math journals, homework, etc. Great value for a year's worth of CCSS. As a K-5 specialist, I bought bundles at EVERY grade level to ensure kids are prepared for what lies ahead in just a few weeks!" - The Maen Teacher (TPT Seller)

"MOST AMAZING RESOURCE EVER. Bought it for 3rd grade and now I teach 4th, so I bought it again!" - Buyer

"This product was a life saver! It was a great resource to use in preparing students for PARCC. I'm switching grades so I am excited to see that there is one for 5th grade. I can't wait to use this throughout the year. I really enjoyed how you had Type I, Type II and Type III questions. It gave my students an understanding of how the questions can vary. Great product!!" - Devon M.

"This is by far one of my favorite resources for my my students. I like how the type of question is indicated along with the standard. The questions keep students engaged and thinking. It is really beneficial." -Buyer

"This problem of the day resource is INCREDIBLE!!! I love how it gets the students to understand/think about math in a deeper context. Thanks SO much!!!" - Cheryl W.

"These PARCC practice problems are awesome! Thank you so much for making them. I would gladly buy more if you feel like making a volume II for third grade:)

Thanks for all your hard work...worth every penny." -Jennifer R.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “Give Brainy Gifts from Multiple Intelligences”

by Ellen Weber - Brain based tasks for growth mindset
6th - 12th Grade

Think of this activity as a celebration of winter holiday giving, as students reach into their own mental pool and build on multiple intelligences.

Students love this wind-down activity that teaches mental gift-giving approaches.

Student groups can select gifts to create for another small group. Or students can create for friends, for an unsuspecting classmate, or for a family member.

Grades are based on the assessment criteria (provided), and on team participation for this lesson.

Hopefully these brain based materials are beneficial to your students as they are to mine at middle school, secondary and university levels.

If you have any further questions about how to get the most from this product, please do contact me at eweber1@frontiernet.net and I’ll be glad to help further.

Do visit the Mita International Brain Center at http://mitaleadership.com/ where you can follow my latest additions, get updates of new brain based materials and find FREE student-ready materials to download.

The Top 10 Traits of an AAC Classroom

I made a list of the Top 10 Traits of an effective AAC classroom after I was asked this question by an advocate during an IEP meeting.

I also summarized the Top 3 Issues of AAC classrooms, as I see it in my daily practice.  They included programming, planning, and organizing.

And finally, I also discussed the 1st Best Thing to Do in an AAC classroom at the beginning of every year; which is:  Back. It. Up. Now.

So, what did I tell this advocate we should see in classrooms with AAC users?

1. Students who do not have sufficient verbal language skills to meet all of their communication needs have an AAC system that offers them at least basic core vocabulary.

2.  Staff are consistently using Aided Language Stimulation and modeling, and are familiar enough with the students’ systems to do so effectively.

3.  Staff redirect students to their AAC systems if they are not understood, or if they are relying on gesture and body actions when they are able to use more standard modes.

4.  Staff model and require communication for a variety of functions - not just requesting.

5.  AAC users are being taught literacy skills using effective teaching strategies.

6.  Staff repeat, affirm and then elaborate student responses.

7.  AAC skills are taught and reinforced in natural, contextual activities, not drill formats.

8.  Core vocabulary is taught, reinforced and expanded continuously, and topical materials for the classroom are modified to use core words.  Teachers are teaching descriptively, not referentially.

9.  Student narrative skills are a focus of classroom activities.

10.  Conversational interactions are a focus of classroom activities.

So, those are my top 10.  How do your rooms add up?

Keep on Talking.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Christmas Countdown and the 12 Days of Christmas”

by Diamond Mom
1st - 3rd Grade

Christmas Countdown
This is a countdown poster for counting down the 24 days before Christmas. Each day that passes can be crossed off or the ornament could be decorated until all 24 are done.

The 12 Days of Christmas
This is a set of writing pages for the 12 days of Christmas. It is based on the song The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Each day a different item can be selected and a drawing can be added. It would be fun to have the pages made into a booklet and then presented like a song.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON - “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Movie Qs for before and during)”

by Erin Schneider
6th - 9th Grade

Great to use with Exploration!!! This 20 question handout was created as a before and during viewing guide for the Disney movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (PG-13). Half of the questions are to be answered before the students view the movie (questions are marked before or after). These questions require the students to research (on their own time, probably using the internet) Ponce de Leon, The Fountain of Youth, Pirates vs. Privateers, etc... The other half of the questions guide the students through the viewing of the movie. I chose to go over the "before" answers as a class prior to watching the movie. This provided us with good teaching/learning moments. A few of the questions require students to circle places on the included maps.

A key is included, as is a "notes to the teacher" page.

Common Core Standards Addressed:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.9
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.4
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.2
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.10

Also comes in a money-saving combo pack of several movie activities for world history.
World History Movie Questions/Activities Money Saving Bundle

Take a look and download. Remember if you rate the product you get TpT credits. Thank you!

#GiveBackFriday

By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

During this holiday season, I’m participating in a one day #GiveBackFriday sale with a wonderful group of teacherpreneurs. I’d especially like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of my customers and friends by offering two products at 50% off. Since this is the time for giving, I’ll be donating 20% of my profits to an organization called American Foundation for Children with Aids (AFCA) run by my niece, Tanya Abadia.

AFCA supports efficient and sustainable programs that promote self-reliance for children infected and/or affected by Aids as well as their families and caregivers.  They work in regions that are underserved and marginalized providing care that is measurable, real and hope filled.  If you’re interested learning more about this organization, here is a link. www.afcaids.org

All you have to do is go to Tpt and type in #GiveBackFriday and you will see all the items that are half price.

The resources that I’m including are a values lesson entitled How to Beat the Holiday Blues. Holidays are a time of sadness for many, and our children are not immune. This little activity will help them to feel better about themselves.  It involves having the children give complimentary notes to each other, and the teacher.

Socrates Lantern's Tpt Store
The second resource is a winter writing prompt bundle entited, Sno Wonderful Literacy and History Writing Prompts for Winter. It includes: No Prep Printables such as Writing Task Cards, and Posters for Narrative, Persuasive, Descriptive, Expository and Creative Writing.  History, Legends, Comprehension Questions, Rough Drafts, Graphic Organizers, Timelines, and  Final Copy Sheets.  Writing Activities consist of New Year’s Resolutions, Martin Luther King Jr, Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day, President’s Day, and; General Winter Themes.
