FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “To Kill a Mockingbird-Chapter 1, Abridged, Graphic Chapter”

by English Oh My
8th - 12th Grade

*****To Kill a Mockingbird-Chapter 1*****

If you are teaching To Kill a Mockingbird, you know that it is a challenging novel for any age, and if you are like me, I teach the novel in 8th grade! For 8th graders, many of the events, the time period, and the vocabulary are extremely difficult, especially for the students who struggle with reading or have a learning disability. I originally created this for my Integrated students because they really struggled with chapter one, and chapter one can go on for days.

***Here is what I did with the first chapter:

*I took out some of the very difficult vocabulary and made it more “readable” for lower level students.
*Harper Lee is an amazing writer, and she is very descriptive; therefore, I took out some of the over zealous description to cut back on the length of the first chapter.
Because there is a lot of setting and history in chapter 1, I added pictures to make the chapter a bit more understandable. How cute is the character clipart?!?!?! You can thank Illumismart for this amazing clipart.

***As you can see, this FREEBIE took some time and love. I would greatly appreciate it if you can leave me feedback for this goody. If you have any problems, please be sure to contact me before leaving feedback at englishohmy@gmail.com.***
