ACADEMIC LANGUAGE versus Academic Vocabulary

Happy November everyone,

I am so glad you are here!  Ready for a little ELD conversation?
Let’s get started.

Here is the question:
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE versus  Academic Vocabulary are these 2 terms the same or different?

Have you noticed that these terms are often used interchangeably?  To understand the differences between these two words let’s take an in-depth look at the precise meaning of each word.

Delving into these 2 terms it becomes apparent that the overarching concept is ACADEMIC LANGUAGE.

ACADEMIC LANGUAGE
the specialized language of academic discourse and textbooks.

Many researches insist that proficiency in ACADEMIC LANGUAGE is the most important predictor of academic success for individual students. Students must learn the many skills that are interwoven into the notion of ACADEMIC LANGUAGE

Academic Vocabulary is an important component, it is only one cog on the wheel we call ACADEMIC LANGUAGE.

ACADEMIC LANGUAGE is a complex concept and requires teaching students:
    • the phonological features of English
    • academic vocabulary and word formation rules (Lexical knowledge)
    • grammar
    • discourse
    • cognition

Here is a little more detail on each of these important areas:

    • Phonological Features include the sound patterns and intonation of English.

    • Vocabulary and Word Formation includes teaching:
            o prefixes, suffixes and roots
o tier 1, 2, and 3 words (here is where academic vocabulary comes in)
            o parts of speech
            o multiple meanings of words
o the grammar rules that apply to word formation and usage.

    • Grammar comprises:
o the correct use, rules, and understanding of the parts of speech
            o word classes
            o inflections
            o increasing word complexity
            o understanding complex sentence structures
            o syntax

    • Discourse entails:
o the ability to use words
            o to organize knowledge
            o to exchange ideas

    • Cognition encompasses:
            o the mental action of:
                     •  thinking
                     • understanding
                     • learning
                     • remembering.

As you can see Academic Vocabulary is just a small part of the intricate concept of ACADEMIC LANGUAGE.

These two words should NOT be used interchangeably.

They loved learning with music and remembered what they have learned. "Where is Thumbkin?" was a perfect song for ESL students and early learners since it involves repetition.

FREE MATH LESSON - “FREEBIE Number Bonds Drag and Drop Bingo for Numbers 1-5 – Distance Learning”

by Colleen's Cosmic Collection
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

Google Slides Bingo for practicing Number Bonds for numbers 1-5 with small groups. Perfect for Distance Learning!

This resource is great for practicing number bonds in a fun, interactive way with your students, even when they are at home! They will be able to practice quick fact recognition as they look for the sums on their boards that equal the numbers you call out.

Each Board has 9 blocks, with different sums that add up to the numbers from 1 to 5. When you call out a number from a Calling Card, your students must look for a sum on their Boards that equals the number called. They then cover that block with a Playing Square by dragging it on to their Bingo Board and dropping it in place. Play continues until somebody has three blocks covered in a row and calls out BINGO!

How to use:

Assign a copy of the file to your students through Google Classroom. For this activity, you will need to select “Students can edit file”. This way, all students will be using the SAME COPY of the file.

Set up a Google Meet session that will run while you play this game with your students.

Remember: in order for the moveable parts to work, you and your students need to work in editing mode!

If you click the “Present” button, you will not be able to do the activity.

In this resource, you will get:

  • COMPREHENSIVE instructions on how to use this resource. If you still have problems in knowing how to use the resource, please do not hesitate to ask me a question.
  • A slide for you to enter your students’ names so that they can just click and go to their Bingo Boards. If you reuse this resource with the same group of children, just randomly re-enter their names so they will get different Bingo Boards!
  • A slide with Calling Cards for you to drag on to the slide as you need to so that your students can see the number you have drawn.
  • 5 different Bingo Boards with sums that equal the numbers from 1 to 5.

If you like this resource, you may like to take a look at the full version, along with my other Number Bonds Drag and Drop Bingo Games here.
