Math Lesson – “Distributive Property Scavenger Hunt Game”

My students love these scavenger hunts. I have never seen them so actively engaged and excited about the distributive property.  Its format is easy to setup for teachers and gets students out of their seats.  It is self-checking and allows teachers to work 1-on-1 with students who need remediation.  This scavenger hunt has a mathematician theme which leads to great discussions with students about what a mathematician is and does.  Awesome activity to add to your unit!

As the days become warmer and longer, people seem to “spring” into action. Everywhere you look, there are people outside enjoying the pleasant weather.

Have you ever heard of Spring fever? It’s a term use to describe an increase in people’s energy levels that happens during Spring. What will you do with your extra energy this Spring? 

  

Did you know that Spring marks the beginning of the planting season? People all over the world celebrate Spring by planting flowers and vegetable gardens. Farmers plow their fields to get ready for planting their fields. All over the nation there's a sense of change in the air.

How do you celebrate Spring? 

I plan to get outside and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer!

Task Card Review Games - How to utilize them more effectively in your classroom

Not too long ago I had no idea what a task card was or how it could effectively be utilized in the classroom.  I did some research and what I found was that task cards were simply worksheets, broken down into individual questions posted onto cue cards and I wasn't really that impressed.  I started thinking about what I could do to make task cards into an engaging, high energy review game. Since then I've started amassing a diverse supply of activities which are listed below.

These Task Card resources are unique. They can be utilized in a clue gathering, puzzle solving, highly active and engaging activity and/or as an alternative to worksheet review in an individual or group setting.  These activities provide 45 minutes of high energy, competitive engagement that sneaks in a lot of review even for those students who are usually against such things.

Elementary Mathematics: Area and Perimeter of Polygons Word Problems, Converting between Decimals, Fractions and Percentages, Decimals - Four Basic Operations, Multiplication and Division Word Problems & Fractions

High School Mathematics: Solving Quadratic Equations, Polynomials - Binomials and Trinomials & System of Linear Equations

Science: Space - The Study of the Universe, Biology: Cells and Body Systems & Chemistry - Atoms, Compound Naming and Chemical Reactions
