Distance Formula

This is a great activity on the distance formula.  Students will be working in groups of 2-4.  This activity includes 8 task cards that will have students calculating the total distance of a golf balls starting position to the hole.  Each task card becomes more difficult.  You can purchase this activity by going to

FREE MATH LESSON - "Three of a Kind with School Supplies"

It is definitely testing season.  But, for the very little ones, some assessments can be 'informal'.  You can assess number sense with some FREE small group games

like this one from my Made For Learning store.

This particular game is fun at any time of the year and can be modified by choosing which numbers are going to be used.  The goal is to find 3 cards that show the same number using ten frames, numerals, and sets of objects.  Simple and fun......and FREE!

Let's Make a Coordinate Plane Foldable

Do you want to create a coordinate plane foldable?

I love using foldables in the classroom as a change of pace.  Better yet, students love them too!  

This foldable takes up minimal space in your interactive math notebook when complete.  It is a great resource to refer to all year!

How can you make it?

• First, make sure that you cut your graph paper so it is a perfect square.  
• Next, fold all four corners to the middle. 
• Write the Quadrant Numbers on the Outside.  
• Then, draw an x- and y-axis on the inside.  
• After that, show examples of points in all quadrants and on the x- and y- axis.  
• Be sure to include the positive and negative directions.
• To get the first picture that says, “Coordinate Plane”, fold quadrants I and II down on top of quadrants III and IV.

Math Lesson - "Greater Than, Equal, Less Than - 1 Skill, 3 Levels"

Greater Than, Equal, Less Than: 1 Skill, 3 Levels


Included in this packet are activity pages for Kinder level, 1st grade level and 2nd grade level in the skill of 'greater than, equal or less than'.  Each level is color coded so you can easily choose the pages that are just right for each student.  Take a look at some of these pages here.

 

Each different activity has a sign that states the 'I Can' standard, the 'I Need' materials list and a picture example of how to complete the activity.  An Answer Key is also included for each activity.

To follow-up with seatwork or homework, each page is also in a black & white version for easy printing.  So, whether you are working with Kinder, 1st or 2nd graders, you can find the activity level that is just right.

Math Lesson - "Math Board Game 6th Grade - Geometry (6.G)"

This board game is fun for the students while they sharpen their skills and deepen their understanding of geometry concepts. They will draw a card and they must correctly answer the question in order to move along the game board. The rules of the game are explained in the Preview.

Dots Fun!

I am always looking for ordinary items that can be used in the classroom as manipulatives. I'm a firm believer in the Conceptual Development Model which advocates teaching the concrete (using manipulatives) prior to moving to the pictorial before even thinking about the abstract.  When I was at the Dollar Store (a great, inexpensive place to purchase school stuff) I saw sets of dominoes for $1.00 each.  Since they were inexpensive and readily available, I decided to create several math activities and games to introduce, reinforce, or reteach math concepts.

The Number 52

Think about it; if you lay a domino horizontally, you have a two digit number.  Put two dominoes side-by-side, and a four digit number is created.  Now you can work with place value, estimation, or rounding.  How about lining up dominoes in a column, and working on addition (with or without regrouping) or subtraction (with or without renaming)? 

Another perfect domino activity is practicing addition or multiplication facts.  How about adding the two sides of the domino or multiplying the two sides together?

The Fraction 1/4

If a domino is placed vertically, you immediately have a fraction.  Placed one way it is a proper fraction, but rotated around, it is an improper fraction which can then be reduced.  A fraction can also be changed into a division problem, a ratio, a decimal, or a percent.

So think outside that box of dominoes and use them as an inexpensive math manipulative because Dots Lots of Fun!
