Integrate some early writing assessment and writing instruction with your getting-to-know-you activities by using this set of four colorful "talk and write" picture prompts.

Talking before writing gets students thinking. Giving them specific questions like the one on these cards gives them even more ideas for writing. You'll see the length and variety in your students' writing improve when you start a writing lesson or writing workshop by displaying and discussing these prompts!
How can you use these?
* Display a discussion prompt card on your interactive board, using your laptop of document camera. Discuss the first part of the prompt together. Then "turn and talk" with partners or small groups.
* Print multiple copies of the cards and have students talk about them together, with each student writing brief notes to guide them when they start to write.
* For distance learning, try displaying one of the cards on your screen to help initiate discussion. You might also model taking brief notes on the discussion, and show your students how your notes will help you as you begin to write. You can also post these on your password-protected classroom site or screenshot pages to send home via email.
* These early independent writing experienced, scaffolded with talking and note-taking before writing, are a wonderful way for you to do some informal assessment of your students' writing: organization, sentence structure, mechanics (punctuation, capitalization), and spelling can all be observed and recorded from writing samples like these.
Print on card stock and laminate. These pages will print fine in black and white to conserve color ink.
