Why is Visual Discrimination Important? What is it?

As a child continues to learn about the world around him. Visual Discrimination and Visual Memory Skills are developing.  He recognizes family and friends.  He is able to name and identify familiar animals, (e.g., cat, dog, rabbit) objects, (e.g., table, chair, cup, spoon, car) and foods (e.g., apple, orange, banana, toast).  He can identify and name farm and zoo animals.

Visual Discrimination is a general title that also includes:

•         visual discrimination
•         visual sequencing
•         figure-ground 
•              visual memory skill development

Visual Sequencing:  Creating or following patterns, or building a snowman lead to  being able to remember sequencing of letters for reading and writing or numbers for math activities.

Visual Discrimination: Activities like sorting shapes strengthen a child's observational skills … a process that enables the brain to interpret visual information. 

Figure Ground: Finding “Waldo” challenges the brain to search for a hidden picture among lots of visual images.  Playing games like “I Spy” or going on a scavenger hunt also develop the ability to visually locate and identify shapes and object embedded in a busy background.

Visual Memory: To a child a chair is a chair no matter which way you flip or turn it.  Now we tell them that the symbols for letters and numbers may look similar, but they have different meanings!  Learning to identify and name colors and shapes helps to develop visual memory skills.

FREE MATH LESSON - Same and Different: “Sort and Classify Dogs”

Check out these Same and Different Activities for sorting DOGS! Use the picture cards to create graphs, sort and classify dog shapes/ outlines and colors and define your own sorting rules. A great same and different Math Center Activity for PreK and Kindergarten.

SORTING TASKS:

• Use visual discrimination skills to sort the animals by color, shape, size, direction, or other common features.
• Begin with teacher-directed tasks, or class demonstrations when learning how to sort.  (Use one attribute, e.g. color or shape for an initial sort.  Then add a second attribute, color and shape, etc.)
• Invite the children to play with the material and think of their own sorting rule. Be aware of individual differences.   Support and encourage the learning.  After the sort ask, “What is your sorting rule?”  Invite them to share their reasoning, “Tell me why this animal is here.”  “Why did you use the bears?” Encourage them to “think about their thinking.” Take opportunities to extend the learning.

CREATE AND EXTEND PATTERNS!  (Use sentence strips to provide a visual line for the sequence.)  e.g.

•        a b a b a b

•        aa bb aa bb aa bb

•        abc abc abcabc

•        abbc  abbc abbc

•        aabbc aabbc aabbc

SORTING TRAYS

•        Use some of the 8 sorting circles provided.

•        Use divided trays from the dollar store.

•        Paper plates and hula-hoops  make good sorting rings.

•        As the children gain skills, add a Venn diagram.  

Mathematical concepts and language learning… they all overlap!

FREE: GLITTER AND GERMS! - A Fun Way to Teach About the Spread of Germs in our Classrooms!

GLITTER AND GERMS!

~A fun activity to teach how germs are spread~

This is a fun activity that I have done with my kiddos for many, many years! It is a great way to get across the message that germs are spread from mouth/nose, to hands, to people and objects. 

MATERIALS:

-Glitter (the finer the better)

-Kiddos!

1. Without the kiddos seeing, sprinkle glitter into your hands. This works best if you then clench your fist.

2. Then pretend to have a coughing/sneezing fit, making sure that the kiddos see you coughing and coughing into your hand. 

3. After that, start shaking their hands, pat them on the arm, hand someone a book - whatever you can think of to 'spread the germs' that are on your hands. 

4. By now they should start to notice what is happening! This is the time to talk about germs and how they are spread in the classroom. Ask someone whose hand YOU shook, to shake a classmate's hand. Point out how your 'germs' have now spread to two people. 

5. Ask the children how this could be prevented - directing the conversation to proper hand washing and coughing/sneezing into their sleeve, not the palm of their hand. 

6. This is also when I go over the proper hand washing techniques (even though I've done it a million times since day 1!). I demonstrate how to properly wash my hands then choose a student or two to do it also. We sing Twinkle, Twinkle while scrubbing with the soap - tops and bottoms, and I encourage turning off the water with the paper towel. 

7. I then follow up with this FREEBIE worksheet on proper hand washing techniques. There are 2 different levels to choose from - one for students to write their response and the other for students to draw their response.
