FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “FREE Rubrics for Writing a Summary”

by HappyEdugator
6th - 9th Grade

A free writing rubric assessment tool for a short summary. You get two rubrics: one for writing an objective summary and one for writing a summary with critical analysis. The common core standards require students to write constructed responses to prompts on mastery assessments. Students have to be able to summarize objectively and with analysis and interpretation.
Objective summary - This rubric is for a summary of the passage, either fiction or non-fiction, that includes the main details of the topic and the key points, giving the gist of the writing, but without any opinion.
Summary with Analysis - This rubric is for a brief summary of a passage, either fiction or nonfiction, that includes analysis with textual support. It could be a summary of a plot that includes an analysis of the characters' actions, citing evidence from the text to support any claims, or a summary of a newspaper article with analysis or comparison to other work, supporting any claims with evidence from the text.
Use for Language Arts Test Prep. Prepared for middle grades writing assessments in order for students to have practice writing summaries before taking a state standardized test.
This is a free sample of the product
This rubric is also included in my Middle School Writing Rubrics BUNDLE
