Building Math Vocabulary

One of the most important things you can do to help your child succeed in math is to build their math vocabulary.

Just as with reading, a strong math vocabulary is essential for understanding new concepts and being able to communicate about math with others. Unfortunately, many elementary math curricula don't include a lot of focus on math vocabulary. This is a shame because math vocabulary is so important!

Here are just a few reasons why building math vocabulary is so important:

1. Math vocabulary helps kids understand new concepts. If a child doesn't know the meaning of a word, they can't possibly understand the concept that the word represents.

2. Math vocabulary helps kids communicate about math with others. If a child can't explain what they're doing or thinking, it's going to be very difficult to get help from a teacher or tutor. They also won't be able to participate in math class discussions.

3. Math vocabulary helps kids feel confident about math. If a child doesn't know the words associated with math, they're more likely to feel insecure and unsure of themselves. This can lead to math anxiety and avoidant behaviors.

Building math vocab should be part of every elementary math curriculum. There are lots of great ways to do this, such as using flashcards, playing games, and reading books together. So don't wait - start building your child's math vocab today!
