FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Sight Word Practice Game: Snowman Squish!”

Thanks for downloading this freebie, by Sara Ipatenco! This game is a fun way for your students to practice their sight words. Place all the cards in a container. Students take turns drawing a card. If they can read the word on the card, they get to keep it. If they don’t know the word, they put it back in the container. If a student draws a “squish!!” card, he/she must put all his/her cards back into the container. The “squish!!” card gets put to the side. Once all the cards are drawn, the winner is the person with the most cards. I usually put my students in groups of 2 to 4 to play this game. Laminate the cards for extra durability. I also print them on cardstock so the images don’t show through the back of the card! I hope your students have fun practicing their sight words!!

Free Thanksgiving Compare and Contrast Activity

There are a lot of different stories about the first Thanksgiving, and they are sometimes contradictory about who was there and what was eaten.

History tells us that the feast actually lasted for 3 days. Can you imagine all the food you eat on that one Thursday going on for 2 more days? I can't.

Many years ago I worked with a man whose family was Italian. Their feast was always amazing, as he described it, but certainly not what the original settlers ate.

Being able to explain how things are the same (compare), are different (contrast), and why (explain) is a skill we practice in language intervention. Being able to see, describe, and explain the critical features of two different objects, actions, or events is a critical language skill.

Here is an activity about today’s Thanksgiving “feasts” and the original ‘Thanksgiving’ dinner between the settlers and the Wampanoag Native American tribe.

You can read the brief narrative to the students and/or show them the Venn diagram. Then have them practice telling one thing about how the meals were the same and different.

You can also have students practice writing sentences or a paragraph.

However you choose to use it, the activity will build on students' language skills. Have fun, and keep on talking!

FREE MATH LESSON - “Write the Room: Reindeer Addition”

Cut out the reindeer number sentence cards, laminate for durability and place them around your room. Give each child a recording sheet and let them get some wiggles out while also being productive and practicing their math skills!

There are 2 different levels included. The first group of reindeer can be used for “Adding Doubles and 0” and the second group is for
“adding 1” to help accommodate different learning levels.
