FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Gratitude Journals: A Free Lesson to Foster Thankfulness in Students”

by The Three Square Pegs
2nd - 10th Grade

Gratitude journals have been shown to be an effective strategy ANY TIME OF THE YEAR, both at a personal level for students and as a great climate-builder for the classroom. The concept is very simple: Want your students to feel happier and healthier? If the answer is “Yes!” then have them begin writing about the people and things for which they are thankful. How easy can it get?!

Journal time can be embedded almost anywhere in the school day… during writing instruction, as a morning routine activity, as a guidance lesson, or as an end-of-the-day wrap-up activity. It only takes a few minutes and the benefits are well worth the time!

This free download provides basic templates for journaling for all grade levels, along with an easy lesson to use at the onset to explain the benefits of gratitude to your students.

You can use the .pdf version or the EASEL version, whichever is best suited for your class! The EASEL version allows students to do their gratitude journals and letters remotely if necessary.

🎉 Let's Make Math Fun with Figures of Speech! 📚✨

I hope you're all having a fantastic day! As we dive into the world of numbers, let's sprinkle in some fun with figures of speech! By now you know I love idioms and figurative language! 😊 It is such a simple way to bring fun into my teaching and add a little language into Math!  Here are three playful expressions for each grade level (K-5) to make math even more exciting! 🎈

Kindergarten 🎨
1. "A Piece of Cake!" 🍰
Use this when talking about simple addition—let them know it's as easy as enjoying a slice of cake!

2. "Count Your Chickens!"🐣
When introducing counting, remind them that every little chicken counts in the barnyard!

3. "Bigger than a Bear!" 🐻
Use this to describe big numbers—nothing's bigger than a bear in their minds!

1st Grade 🚀
1. "All Tied Up in Knots!" 🪢
When explaining tricky problems, remind them that we can untangle those knots together!

2. "On Cloud Nine!" ☁️
Use this when students solve a problem correctly—who wouldn't feel like they're floating on a cloud?

3. "Number Ninja!" 🥷
Encourage them to tackle math challenges like sneaky ninjas—swift and stealthy!

2nd Grade 🦁
1. "Roaring with Numbers!" 🦁
Encourage them to be brave with big numbers, just like a lion!

2. "Jumping Through Hoops!" 🎪
Use this when they tackle tricky problems—showing their skills by leaping over challenges!

3. "Putting on Your Thinking Cap!" 🎓
Remind them that sometimes they need to think creatively to solve math problems—let's get those brains working!

3rd Grade 🎩
1.  Like Finding a Needle in a Haystack! 🌾
Use this when they're solving word problems that seem tricky. But don't worry, we'll find that needle together!

2.  "Math Magician!""🎩
Encourage them to think of themselves as magicians when they discover new ways to solve problems—abracadabra, math magic!

3.  "On the Right Track!" 🚂
Remind them that with each step they take, they're on their way to math success!

4th Grade 🧩
1.  "Piecing Together the Puzzle!" 🧩
Use this when working on problem-solving strategies—each piece matters to see the whole picture!

2. "Going the Extra Mile!" 🏃‍♂️
Celebrate their hard work when they go beyond just solving problems—they're racing ahead!

3.  "Breaking Down Barriers!" 🚧
Encourage them to tackle difficult concepts by breaking them down into manageable parts!

5th Grade 🚀
1.  "In the Driver's Seat!" 🚗
Remind them that they control their math journey—steering toward success with every problem they tackle!

2.  "Climbing the Math Mountain!" 🏔️
Use this expression to inspire them to conquer challenging topics, one step at a time!

3.  "The Sky's the Limit!" ☁️
Encourage their creativity and thinking outside the box—the possibilities are endless in math!

I hope these figures of speech add a splash of joy to your math lessons! Let's keep inspiring our little learners! 💖

Here is a little more information!  Figures of speech are words or phrases that are used to create a specific effect by deviating from the literal meaning of the words. They are an important part of communication, allowing speakers to convey different shades of meaning and more accurate descriptions.
