Language Arts Lesson - "How to Write Powerful Thesis Statements"

by Dianne Mason

By explaining each of the pitfalls to writing good thesis statements and providing numerous examples of weak thesis statements and why they aren’t effective, this class-room tested lesson enables students to formulate powerful thesis statements which, in turn, lead to sound arguments. Included in the package are four worksheets:
Fact vs. Opinion
Narrow the Focus
Topic/Comment Structure
Create an Assertion
These worksheets allow students to recognize and practice writing effective thesis statements. There is also a short quiz. Answer keys are given for each.
