6th - 9th Grade
Using different modalities to teach science helps students stay engaged and develop science concepts. Demonstrations are excellent tools in science class because they are easy to set up, they use few materials, and the teacher guides students through discovery and developing ideas. Demonstrations fulfill the requirements of a phenomenon in the NGSS.
Students observe the demonstration of a meter stick being flipped with and without a piece of newsprint on it. No explanation is provided so students must propose reasons for the phenomenon.
This supplement accompanies a video of the demonstration and includes
- A video on YouTube https://youtu.be/f0ARA-kYZrU?si=N5zhcCpr1EM_Gqyc
- Directions for completion
- Questions
- Suggestions for use in both content areas and timing during learning cycles
- Suggestions for extensions in which students can design experiments.
