Flip Slips: A During-Reading Approach That Can Be Used for Any Novel - $3.00

Are you a reading, language arts, or English teacher that is getting ready to teach a novel? Perhaps you're getting ready to have students do an independent reading assignment? Whatever the case may be, I designed Flip Slips to work with any type of novel. The concept is simple - students have during-reading prompts that help engage them with assigned reading as well as a section for new vocabulary that they encounter while reading the assignment. One "slip," consisting of the prompt and one vocabulary word, is short and simple. Classroom Irritations

Have you ever noticed that the same old problems keep resurfacing year after year in your classroom? Isn’t it funny how the little things sometime put us over the edge? I can always deal with that “special” child, but the continuous line at my desk about drives me crazy. Here are two different classroom irritations which I find to be the most annoying plus some possible solutions to think about before school starts.

A. Getting a Drink; Using the Restroom

1)  Set the number of times each student may go per the week.

2)  Have a restroom pass so only one student is out of the classroom at a time.

3)  Count when the children are getting a drink at the drinking fountain such as 1-2-3.  This way everyone is given the same amount to time.

4)  Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer by the door so children may use it before lunch to clean their hands. (Unfortunately, not all children wash their hands after using the restroom.)

B. The Pencil Sharpener

1)   Have a box of pre-sharpened pencils that all the children may use.

2)   Make a designated time when students may sharpen pencils. If you have an electric pencil sharpener, unplug it during the off limits time.

3)   Designate an individual to be the “pencil sharpener.” This can be a daily job in your classroom. This person performs the task of sharpening pencils before school, after school, or during any other designated time.

4)   Have two cups of pencils near the pencil sharpener, one for dull pencils and one for sharpened pencils. When a child’s pencil is dull, s/he places it in the dull cup and takes one from the sharp cup.

Classroom Management: Behavior Reflection Logs

Hello!
It's back to school time again.  I know my brain starts the shift after 4th of July like all the retailers.  One of the first things I spend time reflecting about is classroom management.  Even after 15 years in the classroom I feel like this is one are where I can continually learn and grow as a teacher.  Yesterday I shared my Student-Friendly Behavior Learning Targets.  Today I'm sharing my Behavior Reflection Logs.

I've used these reflection logs in my classroom for nearly 15 years.  They've been tweaked a little over the years and I will continue to tweak them.  These are meant to help students reflect about their behavior choices and how they are going to change their behavior.  Every student has a bad day once in awhile.  Even my best students know that they too will have to fill one of these out.  It's about reflecting and learning to make different choices in the future.  We all make mistakes.  We just need to learn and grow from them.

There are versions for K-1 students and versions for 2nd grade through 3rd or even 4th grade students.  The younger students can draw pictures.  The older students or more capable students can write about their choices.  They are both in color and in black and white.  You can read more about them and grab them here in my TpT store.

Classroom Management Tool - Student Friendly Behavior Learning Targets

We all post learning targets in our classroom on a daily and weekly basis.  Do you post behavior targets as well?  I always did one for the whole class per week.  But then there are those students who need some individualized support when it comes to their behavior choices.  That's when I use these Student-Friendly Behavior Learning Targets.

Behaviors targeted include:
*I can keep my eyes on my teacher
*I can listen to my teacher
*I can sit criss-cross applesauce
*I can take care of materials
*I can work quietly
*I can raise my hand before speaking
*I can get my work done on time
*I can turn my work in
*I can turn my homework in
*I can keep my desk neat and clean
*I can use words to solve problems
*I can stay in my seat
*I can keep my hands and feet to myself
*I can treat others with kindness
*I can try my best and not give up
*I can choose to have a positive attitude

All of these are designed to help your student learn to make different choices with one specific behavior.  By targeting one behavior and giving frequent positive feedback students achieve success and learn to make better choices.
