Classroom Management Tool - Student Friendly Behavior Learning Targets

We all post learning targets in our classroom on a daily and weekly basis.  Do you post behavior targets as well?  I always did one for the whole class per week.  But then there are those students who need some individualized support when it comes to their behavior choices.  That's when I use these Student-Friendly Behavior Learning Targets.

Behaviors targeted include:
*I can keep my eyes on my teacher
*I can listen to my teacher
*I can sit criss-cross applesauce
*I can take care of materials
*I can work quietly
*I can raise my hand before speaking
*I can get my work done on time
*I can turn my work in
*I can turn my homework in
*I can keep my desk neat and clean

All of these are designed to help your student learn to make different choices with one specific behavior.  By targeting one behavior and giving frequent positive feedback students achieve success and learn to make better choices.

Sahara Special: Believing in All Students!

The book I'm reading as a read aloud to my class right now is Sahara Special by Esme Raji Codell. It's the first time I'm reading it and my class is LOVING it!

This book will make you (& your students) laugh out loud, gasp, become teary-eyed, and cheer for this heroine. Although at first it was difficult for many of my students to relate to Sahara’s tough neighborhood and type of kids, Ms. Codell writes in such a way that my class was quickly hooked into following the characters.

Sahara practically lives at the library after school, reading voraciously and writing her life story, Her Heart-Wrenching Life Story and Amazing Adventures, but she refuses to read, write, or do any work in school. So she is put in Special Ed and taunted by her classmates as Sahara Special.  By the end of fifth grade, her mother insists she be taken out of Special Ed and flunked if she is not doing her work.

So the next year, Sahara is back in a regular fifth grade class, and although she won't be Sahara "Special" anymore, she doesn't expect much to be different...until she meets the new 5th grade teacher, Miss Pointy. She is unlike any teacher the class has ever met! From her eggplant-colored lipstick, to her wacky clothes; think of a zanier version Mary Poppins meets Miss Frizzle (Magic School Bus series), Miss Pointy is different. And Sahara takes notice and begins to have hope that things WILL be different.

I know you & your students will love this book! Here's a freebie: a short little author study with Esme Raji Codell worksheet you can use with your class! I used it as students had independent work time; it has a QR code to get to her site. (Somehow being able to scan that made my students think it is so much fun!)

The season for students to ask teachers to write them college recommendation letters is fast approaching – especially for those seniors applying for early admission (November 1st Deadline). 

These letters are so very important in the application process, even more so when the admission deans are choosing between students with very similar qualifications. Considering that point, teachers want to guarantee that each letter showcases the student honestly and succinctly.

After writing recommendation letters for over two and a half decades, I decided to analyze those that I had written and to compile a How To list along with sample letters for three types of students: Superior, Above Average and Average. The result, this seven-page posting includes:

• qualities to address such as: Academic, athletic and personal prowess
•  points to consider, especially for students whose academic record could benefit from an educator's viewpoint
•  what to avoid as well as what to include
• a basic letter format, and
•  a list of adjectives and phrases to guide teachers though the process.

At the end of this package, I provide three sample letters to show how all of these points can be meshed into a cohesive recommendation - one each for superior, above average and average students. 

After using the information in this packet, teachers will be able to write a personal, yet concise and specific letter for any student without experiencing any trepidation.
