Learning to make subjects and verbs agree in number is an important writing skill. Most of the time, writers can detect an error in subject/verb agreement because it sounds wrong. To those whose first language is not English, it may be more challenging to hear the errors. In this practice exercise, if students follow the first three steps from Charlene Tess’s Simple Steps to Sentence Sense grammar program, they can easily make the subject agree with the verb in number. You can find out more about these steps on the product page.

Fun ways to seize teachable moments this holiday season!

This is the season of abundance and gifts, with teachable moments everywhere we turn! From learning about how others celebrate the season, to having a true purpose for writing, discovering math concepts, and for those of us who teach in Catholic and Christian Schools, learning about the Nativity!

Learning about how others celebrate the season:

These photos were taken after kindergarten students read stories with their reading buddies about how different characters celebrate the holiday season. The buddies then found similarities and differences between their own holiday traditions!

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Reading-Buddies-Activities-for-the-year-2072071?utm_source=RB&utm_campaign=TBOTEMCBlogger

The big buddies didn't know it at the time, but their little buddies had a surprise in store for them, because the holiday season is also a perfect time to show kids that...

We write for real purposes!

I have dedicated an entire blog post to this topic here, but will emphasize that I think we need to bring back the hand-written Christmas card tradition (or begin that tradition for other holidays). Do you remember the thrill of getting real mail? Writing a card, addressing it, putting the stamp on and mailing it? It meant something. Below are two free samples of Christmas cards with multiple levels of support for your earliest writers!

Math is everywhere during the holidays,

Here's a popular post and product about counting by two's with reindeer. I just added images to create toilet paper roll figures and / or crafts to the Big Christmas Bundle that make ideal manipulatives  acting out the 10 at the Sled Song / Storybook:

Counting by 2s with reindeer and song with the Big Christmas Bundle! $ #christmasliteracy #christmasmath #christmascrafts

Santa stood at his sled and then he said "Come Dasher, come Dancer," so along came Dasher and Dancer, too! There were 2 at the sled and Santa said, "Come Prancer, come Vixen..."

Especially in patterns!

Seize the teachable moments in the holiday season! Do you see any patterns?

Ask kids to go on a pattern hunt throughout the classroom, through picture books or at home. Recreating and extending patterns using a variety of art mediums, on shaped paper, or with beads, cubes, building toys, etc. make exploring patterns so much fun!

Teachable moments abound at Christmas time - especially for patterns! Seize the season!

Here are some fun and easy examples of how students duplicated some of the patterns they found!

Learning about the Nativity

Reading picture books are always a great way to introduce and review content and vocabulary with kids, and there are many wonderful stories about the First Christmas. Having themed costumes, toys, puppets handy are a great way to inspire dramatic play! Check out these amazing Nativity Education Ideas for Young Students on Pinterest!

The images used for these figures are a part of my Big Christmas Bundle on TpT! $ #Nativity #Christmas #earlyliteracy

The images used for these figures are a part of my Big Christmas Bundle. I laminated the color ones before taping them onto the rolls for durability, and the kids colored their own to take home! They really enjoy retelling the story of The First Christmas with these figures.

They also just can't believe it when they realize that these are the exact same characters from their very own readers! Little minds blown! lol

Happy holidays, everyone, and best wishes to you and your loved ones!

Reading Buddies - Tips and tools for an easy start up in your classroom this year!

Tips and tools for starting a #ReadingBuddies program in your classroom this year!

Thinking about starting a Reading Buddies program in your classroom this year? Here are some tips and tools to get things rolling!

Consider putting School-wide Reading Buddies on a staff meeting agenda.

Discuss the benefits for all students with your divisional leads and administration, and even if the seed of the idea is planted to be reassessed next year, it will give you a sense of who might be open to a pairing for this year.

Take age into consideration.

An age / grade difference of 2-3 years between buddies puts a clear boundary between who the big buddies and little buddies are.

Approach a colleague about pairing classes... ...and be realistic about whether your schedules will work! Casual conversation over lunch can often accomplish this, but it seems like our time is less our own these days! Here is a frees free letter and form to simplify the process:

     Reading Buddies teacher letter free

Build Reading Buddy time into your timetable.

When 'it's official' everyone knows what to expect, when. Perhaps it is alternate week familiar reading, word-work, or math skills review through games, part of character education or religious education for forty minutes. While Reading Buddies may not appear in on the timetable your principal has to hand in to the school board, it's important that the kids have this special time to look forward to. It could even happen over lunch!

Define expectations to both classes.

This is accomplished best if done as individual classes, as the expectations differ for the age groups in some ways. Review general expectations when they are brought together for the first few times, and provide visual reminders. Reading Buddies time can quickly look like recess if sixty kids are unsure of what the rules are, half the kids, 'read the book already' and have decided to hang out with someone else!

Talk to your partner class' teacher about general and specific expectations.

I wrote general expectations in a storybook lesson format for my students, explaining to the bigger buddies (third graders) 'This is what I am reading to your little buddies' (kindergarters). One of my TpT customers reads her class the story each year, then posts the pages on a bulletin board! I love that! Here are some ideas for general expectations from my Reading Buddies Starter pack:

What are some expectations that you find important to put in place during Reading Buddies time?
