Language Arts Lesson - "Reading Syllable Types Bundle Packet"

by Reading on Strawberry Lane
Grades K-4

This bundle contains six units that give specific word examples of each syllable word type. The six syllable types of reading are Closed, V-C-e, Open, r-Controlled, Vowel Digraph & Diphthong, and Final Stable. Each unit provides a plethora of word lists that target each syllable type. Teaching reading by syllable types provides students with a clear-cut understanding of the English language. The basic overall purpose of learning syllable type reading is to give students 6 reading strategies to aid them in chunking longer words into short, readable parts.

Thanksgiving Three-of-a-Kind is a 'Made For Learning' game that practices number sense with numbers 1-15.  I love how you can differentiate by choosing the numbers you are practicing.  Some of the little ones that have played this game are Pre-K kiddos that were only ready for numbers 1-5.  Another group of 1st graders loved playing with all 15 number sets.  Tally marks are included as well for students who are ready.

Start by passing out the 'Play' mats that you want each child to fill.  (3 mats each seems to work well.)  Choose the type of card to begin the game.  (ex.  I chose the numeral cards in the game pictured.)  Each child chooses one card from the deck and puts it on his mat.  Continue until all mats being used have a starting card.  (There are 15 sets, so 5 children could play with 3 mats each.  If you limit the sets...say, only use 1-10, then you will have fewer cards to use.)

Players draw a card from the picture or tally deck and see if it belongs on one of their own mats.  If yes, they place it on the correct mat and play continues to the next person.  If it does not belong on the mats, it is put in a discard pile and play continues on.  (I like to allow for strategy here with some students.  Do they need a tally card or a picture card to complete their set?)  Reuse cards from the discard pile as needed.  Play until one student has filled all mats or play until all mats are filled.

To make this into a cut and paste activity, just print on plain paper in grayscale and voila!  It would be fun to give to a small group to complete together.  And wouldn't this make a cute number line!!

Use your imagination and have fun with these Thanksgiving-themed number cards.

The Cay: A Guide to Close Reading this text

The Cay
By Theodore Taylor

A Close Reading Guide

This is a guide to a close reading of the classic, The Cay by Theodore Taylor. It was first published in 1969 and dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. It's about a young boy named Phillip who lives on the island of Curacao with his parents. When WW2 comes to the island, his mother insists they return to the states. However, their boat is torpedoed and Phillip is forced to survive on a small cay with a West Indian man and a cat.

Close reading will be an integral part of teaching with the Common Core. Students need to know how to be analytic when reading texts and poems. I have outlined the components of authentic literacy and what it looks like in the classroom. I formatted the unit as follows. It begins with an explanation of close reading and how to format a lesson. Then, there is a story summary, themes listed and character descriptions. After that, I created focus questions for each chapter. There are explicit gradual release formatted lessons sprinkled throughout. I included a close reading sheet for each of the explicit lessons. You could use the focus questions to create more close reading lessons using the blank templates or for class discussions. At the end, there is a blank sheet for planning and to use with close reading of different chapters. I hope your students enjoy it as much as my students did.

Awards for The Cay:
New York Times Best Book of the Year, Jane Addams Children's Book Award, Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, Horn Book Honor Book, plus 6 more awards

Some comments for my close reading guide:
"Thanks so much for this resource. The close reading activities really add a dimension of rigor to our literature study that aligns so well with the Common Core. "
"It has great activities that are common core ready!"
"This close reading activities are great support to the common core. Loved how the standards were listed."
"Just what I was looking for!"

Earn More $$$ and Create More Traffic to Your TpT Store

Earn additional money and create more traffic to your TpT store by opening up a Tsu account.  Tsu is similar to Facebook in which you have Followers and Friends.  However the big difference is that Facebook makes millions of dollars from advertising, but with a Tsu account, you will share 90% of the advertising income!

This is how Tsu explains how you will earn additional income:

TsÅ«’s algorithm automatically tracks, measures, and distributes revenue to the appropriate user and their Family Tree. At a high level, 90% of revenues are distributed to users. To maintain the platform, tsÅ« receives 10%. To see how this breaks down, let’s take a look at 4 users, all with varying start dates on tsÅ«:
User A invites user B, who invites user C, who invites user D
Part 1
- $100 of earned revenue is generated based on the content user D shared (photos, videos, status updates, etc.)
Part 2
- 90% of earned revenue go to the users. In this case, $90 of the $100 is shared with all the users.
- tsū takes 10% of the $100 for platform fees. In this case $10.
Part 3
- User D, the original content creator takes 50% of the $90. In this case, $45.
- User C gets 33.3% (1/3) of the original $90 generated. In this case, $29.70
- User B gets 11.1% (1/3 of 1/3 = 1/9) of the original $90 generated. In this case $9.99
- User A gets 3.70% (1/3 of 1/3 of 1/3 = 1/27) of the original $90 generated. In this case $3.33

- This is what we call the rule of infinite thirds
We do not know if Tsu will catch on...but it definitely has the potential to be the "next Facebook" because everyone will be able to earn additional money...

The One and Only Ivan: A Close Reading Guide

Close Reading: The One and Only Ivan
by
Lisa Robles

Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller
by renowned author Katherine Applegate

If you have not read this book, you need to. It's an amazing book told from Ivan, the gorilla's, point of view. It's about friendship, courage and love. It's a springboard for a discussion about animal cruelty, friendship and the treatment of wild animals.  Wonderful book for grades 3-8.

I created a close reading unit to help when reading this book in your class. When I do close reading, I provide the work sheet and model the first few lines. What would I underline and what does it make me think?

The focus question is already there for them and there is space for them to underline or highlight and write their thinking on the right side. When they are underlining, they are noticing text. They may see patterns, ideas and language. Then they need to write about why that stuck out at them. When they finish their annotating, they need to go back and answer the focus question. My close reading unit can be found on TPT. The unit has questions for every chapter and there are close reading worksheets with a gradual release lesson for the more pivotal parts. So far, we have completed one close reading lesson so the operative word here is modeling but I hope they become as proficient as my students were last year!
