FREE MISC. LESSON - “Free Back to School Icebreaker Activity”

by The Illustrated Classroom
3rd - 6th Grade

Get to know your students and help them get to know each other with this fun icebreaker activity. The premise: you are stranded on a deserted island! You have five things with you. What are they? I use this as a back to school activity icebreaker or as a fun scaffolded writing activity. Works great for sub plans, homework, early-finishers, homeschool, and distance learning, too.

When I use it as a back to school activity, I use only the first page and have students discuss their choices with each other. After the discussion, I collect them and pass them out randomly. Each student then finds and greets the student whose worksheet they received. If time permits, I collect and repeat.

When I use the entire packet as a writing activity, it usually takes about 45 minutes for the students to complete it, longer for meticulous illustrators.

The kids really get into it. I introduce it like this: "Imagine you are flying an airplane across the ocean. Unfortunately, the airplane has mechanical trouble and crashes into the ocean. Fortunately, there is an island nearby. Unfortunately, the island is deserted. Fortunately, a magical bird lands and gives you the power to summon five items to be with you on the island. What would you want those five things to be?"

It's a lot of fun seeing the imaginative thinking that goes on. The items they come up with are funny! Everything from mansions to cell phones to dolphins to soccer stadiums!
