A Fraction for All Seasons

Do you need something besides a “drill and kill” activity to practice fractions and/or percents?  Math for All Seasons is my newest bundled resource.  It is a 33 page resource that is a fun and engaging way to utilize math concepts while keeping the students actively involved.  Specific words are provided. The students are instructed to figure out the correct fractional part of each particular word.  (Example: The first ½ of WENT would be WE.  Notice that WE is also 2/4 or 50% of WENT.)  If each fractional part is correctly identified, when the students write the fractional parts on the lines provided, a new word is created.  Each group of new words becomes a riddle or the answer to a riddle.

A Fraction for All Seasons
It is important that students understand that a fraction and a percent represent the same thing; so, in the Snow Riddles handout, (page 13) 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% are introduced.

In March Riddles, (page 24) specific questions are asked to acquaint the students with fun facts about the month of March.  April Riddles (page 29) introduces the students to several interesting historical facts that occurred during this month.

For each month, there are between 7-11 word fraction riddles; so, there are numerous ways to practice recognizing fractional parts, understanding equivalent fractions, identifying basic percents (25%, 50%, 75% 100%), and reducing fractions to lowest terms.

Instead of completing all of the monthly riddles in one day, the puzzles may be divided up and used as a focus activity, when a student finishes early, or when there is a short amount of time left before the next class or activity. An individual puzzle may be given each day, or the riddles can be interspersed throughout the week or month.  Answers are included at the end of each month’s activities.  The complete resource features six months (January, February, March, April, October, December) and contains a total of 49 fraction riddles.

If you prefer, each month of fraction riddles may be purchased separately; however, this resource bundles all six months for a discounted price.  Just click the title under the cover page shown above, and download the preview to take a quick look at this new item.

English Language Arts Lessons – "FEBRUARY FLAIR Acrostic: Letter R"

February 5th is R day

FEBRUARY FLAIR Blog Blast

By: Connie Casserly
Grades 6-12

Today, February 5th is R day on the English Language Arts Lessons – FEBRUARY FLAIR Acrostic list. The R in this post stands for

R
Review It!
In this language arts lesson, students will show their understanding of the elements of literature as they analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the story as well as the piece’s intent and whether or not it met this purpose. They will choose direct and indirect citations from the story to support their points.

Review It! should be introduced after students have completed the reading. This activity enables students in grades 6-12 to exhibit their range of thinking skills from knowledge through evaluation. Their writing will demonstrate their understanding of all aspects of the elements of literature as well as their analytic and critical-thinking skills.

Road Trip Time
No matter the time of year, road trips often fill the daydreams of students-and teachers. This language arts lesson for Middle and High School students, Road Trip Time, allows students to live vicariously through the character that they select. These characters may be from

1. The teacher's pre-made list using stories they have studied in class
2. The student's choice from stories they have studied in class, or
3. Students' choices from their independent reading.

The teacher chooses when this activity will enhance lesson content and will develop reading comprehension as well as writing and higher level thinking skills.

Reviewing Texts Activity – Tying it All Together
This
*
FREE 10-page activity offers teachers 8 activities to use prior to the assessment of a text: one each for Character, Plot, Conflict, Setting, Theme, Symbols, Point of View and Closure. Each activity supports Common Core Anchor Standards. Depending on each student's skill, ability and understanding level, teachers may choose to have their charges complete one, some, or all of the activities. When all are completed, students will advance their understanding of each aspect of Bloom's Taxonomy: Remember/Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate and Create. This enables them to develop their higher level thinking skills, a crucial aspect of learning.

Because the activities are open-ended, teachers can have students who need reinforcement in any of the areas complete any of them after the assessment, or in future literature studies.

Understanding how the elements of literature create resilient structures empowers students to build sturdy academic homes.

This R trio of lessons and activities will engage your students and chase away the gray days of February.

Stay warm, stay stress-free and stay lesson-planned.

     Happy Teaching,

By Christina L
Grades 3-6

These task cards are larger than normal (6 questions each) so students can work on just one card. More advanced students may complete more than one card. A "user friendly" method of displaying them is to laminate them, punch a hole in the corner and attach them with a binder ring.

This product includes:
• 10 Task Cards (6 questions each) + 10 Answer Keys (These cards come in both white and      colored backgrounds.)
• Recording sheet to show completion of each card

Topics included:
• Identify the Prepositional Phrase
• Add a Prepositional Phrase
• Create a Sentence
• Run-On, Fragment or Complete Sentence?
• Fix the Fragment
• Fix the Run-On

Suggested Uses:
• Laminate to use year after year

• Place in a literacy center
• Place around the room for “early finishers”
• Good for test review or small group intervention

Thanks for looking!

Back in Time Leveled Reading Comprehension Task Cards!

My students are constantly needing help with reading comprehension skills. I find myself scrambling to head to the copier every morning just to set a few reading tasks for my classes. In the past year, our college tighten strings when it came to photocopying (I know, right!?).

Anyway, since my classroom did not have (still doesn't) a smartboard or a computer for that matter. I thought of this idea where students can read in groups or pairs with laminated re-usable reading task cards! Perfect.

What's included:
- 6 passage cards for level 1 (Grades 2-3) with questions for responding to the text.
- 6 passage cards for level 2 (Grades K-1) with questions for responding to the text.
- 3 response sheets
- 2 independent comprehension readers (each level) and questions to follow.

Check it out in my TPT store here.

Kindness Counts - A Classroom Building Activity for All Grades

Just in time for Valentine's Day!

Anytime during the year is the perfect time for students to practice expressing their appreciation and gratitude for their fellow classmates and friends. I have had great success with this activity at a variety of grade levels from second grade to sixth grade. This class team building activity helps students appreciate each other more, gives them practice expressing themselves in writing, and it  boosts class morale.
Have each student pick a piece of the lined paper included in this product. I have included a variety of different themes and designs as well as a blank one for your own ideas. Have students write their name (in rainbow colors for younger students) at the top of the page and decorate the page. Next, have a class discussion about the best ways of expressing your appreciation of people and classmates. Brainstorm with the class and give examples of appropriate compliments they can use when writing on their peers’ pages. See sample pages included. You can display the sample pages on the front board or around the classroom to help students with their statements. Each student places their page on top of their desk and rotates to the next desk in the row. Their task is to write one thoughtful statement, or compliment about that person in their best handwriting. Depending on the grade level, I have put out different colored thin markers or pens for students to use to add some color to their writing.Have students rotate until they have written on each students page in the class. If you have a large class, each student might need two pages of paper. Last, have the students return to their desks and read all the thoughtful statements and compliments written about them.
