Just in Time for Valentine's Day - Robot, Dinosaur, and Lovable Monster Bookmarks

What could be better than a lovable monster, robot, or dinosaur bookmark from your teacher for Valentine's Day? Kids love robots, dinosaurs, and cute creatures and now they will have the perfect bookmark that's out of this world!

Just print them on on card stock and/or laminate. Punch a hole in the top and add a red ribbon or string. Zip zap you're done!

     To introduce this lesson, ask your students "What invention would make your day and/or your life easier, safer, more productive, happier, etc?" and, "What invention would benefit the world?"

      Next,  explain to them that their mission during the month is to invent something. This innovation may be for personal, business or recreational use in the home, the workplace or for the world at large, and can be something tangible, or something more along the lines of software.

      These  questions open students’ minds to a lesson on advertising and propaganda techniques. Although I have used these projects in my creative writing classes, they could be adapted for a journalism class where students need to learn the differences between fact and fiction for news writing. They also offer a terrific supplemental activity after reading and discussing Animal Farm by George Orwell, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, The Hunger Games or Divergent trilogies, or after any other novel where the use of propaganda is prevalent, and where unconventional inventions would be a benefit to the characters.

      With this activity, students will exhibit their range of thinking skills from knowledge through evaluation. They will also reveal their analytic and critical-thinking skills in writing and talking.

Kindness Counts - A Classroom Building Activity for All Grades

Just in time for Valentine's Day!

Anytime during the year is the perfect time for students to practice expressing their appreciation and gratitude for their fellow classmates and friends. I have had great success with this activity at a variety of grade levels from second grade to sixth grade. This class team building activity helps students appreciate each other more, gives them practice expressing themselves in writing, and it  boosts class morale.

             Have each student pick a piece of the lined paper included in this product. I have included a variety of different themes and designs as well as a blank one for your own ideas. Have students write their name (in rainbow colors for younger students) at the top of the page and decorate the page. Next, have a class discussion about the best ways of expressing your appreciation of people and classmates. Brainstorm with the class and give examples of appropriate compliments they can use when writing on their peers’ pages. See sample pages included. You can display the sample pages on the front board or around the classroom to help students with their statements. Each student places their page on top of their desk and rotates to the next desk in the row. Their task is to write one thoughtful statement, or compliment about that person in their best handwriting. Depending on the grade level, I have put out different colored thin markers or pens for students to use to add some color to their writing.Have students rotate until they have written on each students page in the class. If you have a large class, each student might need two pages of paper. Last, have the students return to their desks and read all the thoughtful statements and compliments written about them.

LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY - "Just Say, 'NO!' to Dull Writing"

This year-long "Just Say, 'NO!' to Dull Writing" activity has always been one of my star middle and high school lesson plans.  On the first day of school, hand out a "Taboo Words and Phrases - Just Say, 'NO!” and a "15 Days to Lose the Taboos” sheet to each student.  

Next, explain how you want them to use them with their writing. I required students to refer to this list for any writing-graded or non-graded. 

NOTE: Tape a copy of the list to each desk, too, for more reinforcement.

Here are some suggestions for using this product:

1. Explain that they are to refer to the Taboo list every time that they revise a draft of an essay, an original poem or fiction piece, or a narrative article. Mention that even if they only revise for these particular words and phrases, their writing will dramatically improve..

2. Discuss that

•  when they use these weak and clichéd words and phrases, their writing is vague, emotionless, and tells instead of shows.
• no matter what type of writing they are composing, students should strive to create word pictures;
• their writing must show, not tell, and to do this they must use concrete, specific nouns and adjectives
• Verbs form the backbone of writing, and should always show action as well as the emotion of the subject performing the action.

3. Write some sentences on the board that use any of the listed weak words and phrases. Have students revise them for strength and clarity.

4. Repeat this information over and over to the students and address it on their final drafts.

5. Have them complete one of the day by day exercises on the “15 Days to Lose the Taboos” handout to suit your individual agendas

The "Just Say, 'NO!' to Dull Writing list also works as a visual to hang in the classroom. For a poster, add the following information:

Effective Writing:

• Shows instead of tells
• Creates word pictures
• Uses concrete, specific nouns and adjectives
• Forms durable writing backbones through strong verbs that show action and emotion.

The other day, a former student who is now a senior in college asked me to send it to her. On my Facebook Profile page she said, "Mrs. C- I am tutoring at CNU's writing center and have to do a presentation on making writing "concise and precise." Could you send me a copy of your Taboo Words list, please? It's been and will continue to be the best advice on writing well that I've found." (Olga S).

When this Taboo Words and Phrases list impacts your students' thinking and writing, it will become a lifelong tool just as it did for Olga.

Banned Book Week -  September 21-27, 2014

Celebrate reading, writing and thinking while you hook your students into Banned Book Week. Here is an engaging product for you to use during this observance of the right to read, or any time during the school year. As students explore various facets of book censorship in schools, they will become more proficient in their reading, critical thinking and writing skills and will gain knowledge about this subject. Whether they choose to investigate the legal, historical, moral or societal aspects of this issue is up to each individual student and his/her personal interest in this topic.

In order to illustrate the points for book censorship in the schools, students will read a frequently banned or challenged novel, either from the included list, or a choice of their own. Next, they will research when, where and why it was challenged or banned. In the last part of the paper, each student will develop his/her opinion on whether the book should be banned or restricted, using points from the paper to support his/her conclusion. Students will follow the style sheet of the teacher’s choosing.

The three pages of Teachers Notes will help you customize this project for your students' skills, abilities and learning styles. 

Students are often shocked when they find out that some of their favorite books have been banned or restricted in schools. With this project, they can explore the Who, What, When, Where and Why so many popular texts read in schools have been challenged. A Parent Approval Form  where students get their parents' permission to read the book that they chose is included.
