Language Arts -"MEGA Bundle Packet of Reading Syllable Vowel Type Words with Word Lists and Games/Activities"

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

Grades K-4

The mega bundle packet includes 400+ words lists and 70+ games and activities!!!

There are 6 syllable types in reading. The basic overall purpose of learning syllable type reading is to give students 6 reading strategies to aid them in chunking longer words into short, readable parts. Learning to read by identifying the type of syllable is the most consistent method to teach reading to your students, and the easiest way for your students to learn to read. All of the words lists incorporate patterns using all the vowels. The closed syllable and V-C-e syllable target words using common phonograms.

This packet of activities and games give students a fun way to learn the syllable types. The activities/games can be placed in language stations, or they can be played during small groups. So enjoy as your students learn another way to break the code to reading!

Comma Rules and Practice for Middle School and High School

There are so many places to put commas that students often struggle with where commas go in a sentence. This lesson packet contain lots of activities to challenge students’ thinking and help them remember comma rules. These activities include opportunities to work in small groups, partners, and as individuals. Collaborative activities, learning stations, individual practice sheets, and a final test are included. This is an excellent teaching tool for grades 6-9 and a great review for grades 10-12. These activities are mainly student-centered.

Included: 12 posters and 12 corresponding sheets for a classroom walk around activity to practice 12 comma rules, a study guide with all 12 rules explained, handouts for practicing each rule, several fun and challenging activity options, a task for holding students accountable for comma rules in their essays, 2 different tests (one multiple-choice and one fill in the commas), and all answer keys.

Use for teaching commas and reviewing commas. I used the first activity with my juniors right before the ACT, and they said it was helpful!

No matter how much kids say they know commas, I have found they still need practice!

LANGUAGE ARTS - "Scooping Words with Two Closed Syllables"

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

Grades 1-3

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.
Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of polish, we would clap out ‘pol’ and ‘ish,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘l’ and ‘i’ in the word ‘pol/ish.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: p o l i s h. This way not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of a misplaced letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with two closed syllables.

Simply print and cut along the guidelines. One idea is to print on card stock or on colored paper. Laminate and use them again and again and keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

LANGUAGE ARTS - Fun Early Literacy Review: Canada Themed No-Prep Printables (and kids' thoughts on Canada Day)!

Blog Post - Fun, NoPrep Canada Literacy Activities and Canada Day conversations with the little people!
Hello my friends! Here in Ontario, we have one week left of classes. At the end of the school year, I like to take some time to discuss Canada Day with my students. For the age group I teach, their perceptions of Canada Days past can be quite entertaining:

That Fun Reading Teacher's student - funny quote on Fireworks #kids say the #darndest things! That Fun Reading Teacher's student's view of #Canada's beginning

Canada Day is clearly a memorable experience for even our youngest students, whether it be of fireworks, time with family or friends during the day. Whether we are retelling a story that we have read together, creating our own adventure, or discussing a personal experience, there is a logical sequence of events and words that match: first, then, finally (or whichever vocabulary you have decided to use!) (For a post about using the 3 part graphic organizer with young students, and a freebie, click here!) Here is a fun Canada Day story that started orally with a reading buddy who helped sort out the three basic story parts before the pictures were drawn (and was duly thanked!)
Canada Read and Write and More - Graphic Organizer

These no-prep printables come from Canada Read and Write and More, the first set of what I have started to develop as a series. Here is the Canada themed and Canada Day writing paper:

My students enjoy 'fun worksheets' every so often. The literacy skills practice pages that are included so far are pictured below:
