FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Folktale Writing”

by Growing Smart Readers
1st - 3rd Grade

Folktale Writing is a writing activity in which kids are able to take a format and add in their own parts of speech to create a little folktale.

This is meant to be a supplemental activity to go along with your folktale unit. It's not a true folktale (one that's been around for generations), but it has the "tone" of a folktale.

My students enjoy making up these kinds of stories, and then rereading them, which are similar to "Mad Libs". They write their own title, too. This activity is targeted for grades 1, 2 and 3, but it can scaffold your hesitant readers / writers in grade 4 so that they can write and read their stories independently.

*Student pages include:
-2 fill-in-the-blank story pages
-1 page word bank page for nouns, verbs, adjectives
-2 pages to organize writing, and brainstorm
-Lined stationery/writing paper
(NOTE: Some words can be used as either noun or verb.)

This printable is suitable and versatile enough for varied learning opportunities. Students could work independently, in pairs, or in small groups--for ESL students, homeschoolers, too. It's also great for a homework assignment, or to use as a substitute lesson plan.

CCSS: This activity addresses several of the Common Core Standards for Reading {Literature and Foundational Skills}, Writing {Narratives}, Language {Conventions and Vocabulary}.
