Language Arts - "National Library Week"

by Kathryn Garcia
Library

How does your school celebrate National Library Week?
This year it will be the week of April 12-18.  If your school takes this time to appreciate your librarian/media specialist, maybe your grade levels might want to 'gift' the librarian with a useful tool for the library that will benefit all of your students as well.  My absolutely most useful tool during my 20 years as a librarian was a call number guide that I first printed out on a ditto machine.  Anybody else remember those?  In later years I was able to convert it to a digital document, and now offer it in my Made For Learning store.  It is my BEST SELLER.

Your librarian would hold the license and then could print and laminate as many copies as she needs, as often as she wants.  I kept boxes of these guides all around the library for students (and teachers) to grab for quick reference.  $3.00 well spent!

Another idea would be to add this genre guide to print on the reverse side of the call number guide.  Then students would have a handy guide for all they might need, saving them time and giving them independence.

These guides can be purchased separately or as a BUNDLE by following these links.

Misc. Lesson - 'Homework For Beginners'

by Kathryn Garcia
Pre-K - Kinder

When my daughter was just beginning her teaching career as a substitute, she had a long-term position in a very low SES Pre-K classroom.  She was amazed at how limited the language development was among her students.  It was an eye-opener for her to realize that there are many, many homes where parents just don't carry on conversations with their toddlers.  It isn't from lack of caring.  Many families are just struggling to get food on the table, maybe with more than one job, or the parents just don't have the confidence to know what the children need.  Often, their English language skills are limited as well.

I created a set of 'homework' pages for her to use to hopefully increase the opportunities for language development in the home environment.  Basically, having a conversation became a homework assignment.  The first week, she was receiving about 2 of the assignments back.  After a few weeks, almost 100% of the homework pages were coming back to school.  Her conclusion was that probably the little ones enjoyed the 'parental interaction' so much that they reminded hounded the parents until they responded.

Maybe you will find some use for this product from my

Made For Learning store that will help with your young students.
Homework For Beginners Set A

Included in each set is a page for parents to help them understand each section of the assignment.  Also, the 'BONUS' section is blank on many pages for the teacher to add something special for that day or week, or for something that is individual to that student.
Here is the parent page.

There are two sets in this black & white product and a BUNDLE is available as well.

Language Arts Lesson - "Thinking About Our Reading"

by Kathryn Garcia
1st - 2nd grade

Reading Workshop teaches us to use strategies when reading.  These strategies help our students relate to their reading in ways that improves their comprehension.  This product from my
Made For Learning store uses posters and sentence stems to teach the strategies in a fun way.

When you take the strategies one-at-a-time, you little ones can practice completing the sentence stems with any story you are using.  Display the posters with the stems as they are introduced.

The troll theme makes the posters, stems and 'key' even more fun.  Even the youngest can practice 'predicting' and 'connecting' with these products that start at the very beginning.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - "Parts of Speech for Beginners: Pronouns"

Before little ones even know what a ‘part of speech’ is, they are using pronouns.  And no doubt, correct usage comes with correct modeling.  New English speakers, ESLs, are also developing pronoun skills.

Right along with color words, these teeny-tiny words are some of the first that little ones learn to read.  Why not make it fun!

is a FREE and fun set of activities to practice 12 of these small little words.

There are 3 pages in color to use in small group or center activity.

And there are 3 pages in black and white for independent practice.

12 flash cards are included to duplicate and give to each child.

Have your little ones circle the correct pronoun or cut apart the pictures and use clothespins to make clip cards.

Go a step further and use the cards for oral language by making sentences about the picture using correct pronouns.

If this Parts of Speech product works well for your students, you might want to continue with the rest of the series.  Take a look at the entire series by clicking this link.  Parts of Speech for Beginners BUNDLE
