This product will save you time as guided notes, guided examples and independent practice are on handouts ready to be copied!

Teacher notes and detailed answer keys are included.

1st Activity – Properties of Operations

Students will fill in blanks as they take notes on properties of operations illustrated with numbers and then with variables. Tiles to model expressions along with area models are used to reinforce the concepts used to write expressions in various ways.
Students may draw representations of tiles on their paper to model different situations. They may use manipulatives to model the expressions and then draw the tiles they used to prove how they got an answer. Included in this resource is a page of variable shapes and a page of unit shapes that may be copied and cut out for each student.

2nd Activity – Equivalent Expressions

Students determine if two expressions are equivalent by substituting a value for the variable and evaluating the expressions. If the expressions are not the same the expressions are not equivalent.

I Have – Who Has Game
There are 30 cards in the game for students to sharpen skills on equivalent expressions.

Five different activities which keep students engaged are included in this product. See Preview for samples of answer keys.

1st Activity: Using the grid provided in the resource or using your own grid paper, students will discover the meaning of zero and negative exponents by writing powers of 2 and relating the values to areas of squares and rectangles. This activity makes very clear that 2 raised to the 0 power is 1. The values of 2 raised to a negative power are modeled also. The activity continues in a similar fashion using squares and rectangles to model powers of 3. 5 student pages

2nd Activity: Guided notes are given on definitions relating to writing numbers in exponential and expanded form. Students will be guided to use these forms to discover the rules of exponents for multiplying and dividing numbers with like bases. 3 student pages

3rd Activity: Multiple choice questions dealing with properties of exponents are given to have students choose which expressions are equivalent or not equivalent. Students are instructed to justify their answers. 2 student pages

4th Activity: Topics covered - Square Roots, Cube Roots, Irrational and Rational Numbers, Equations with the variable squared or cubed. 5 student pages

5th Activity: I Have - Who Has Game on exponents, square roots and cube roots - 30 cards - You have your choice to print a larger version of the cards.

Math Lesson - "Common Core Math Activities 6th Grade (6.EE.9) Tables, Graphs, Equations"

by Hilda Ratliff

Grade 6

This product is aligned to CCSS 6.EE.9. Students are introduced to dependent and independent variables. They are asked to identify dependent and independent variables in various situations. They are required to write an equation to represent a real world situation. This objective requires the student to make a table of values and construct a graph for the data in an application problem. This resource gives much opportunity for a student to make the connection between an equation, a table and a graph.

1st Activity: Guided Notes, Guided Practice, Independent Practice

2nd Activity: Application Problems
These problems deal with real world situations which are represented as either a graph, a table or an equation. Students are required to give the other representations to show how data may be presented in different ways.

3rd Activity: Group Activity
Six different task cards are provided to be used with a maximum of six groups. Students will be given a situation with the data presented as either an equation, a table or a graph. The group must represent the data in the two ways that are not given on the card. Graph paper or grid chart paper along with rulers or meter sticks will be needed for the groups. See two of the task cards above.

4th Activity: Check for Understanding
A one page handout which has students represent an application problem in all three representations will check for student understanding. See this page above.

This is a thorough lesson on common core standard 6.EE.9 which will take at least two class periods. Detailed answer keys are included.
