Language Arts Lesson - "Fiction Football: The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet"

by Dianne Mason
Grades 7-12

Both you and your students will love this fun-filled game based on the rules of football. It provides a thorough review of Shakespeare's most famous love story - The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Players are “passed” questions. Yardage is gained based on the difficulty of the question and whether the “receiver” answers correctly. The question cards are divided into 4 categories from 5-yard cards to touchdown cards with varying degrees of difficulty. There are penalties for wrong answers and chances to “intercept” by the opposing teams. For touchdown questions, the team can “huddle” to come up with an answer. Also included are character descriptions, vocabulary lists with definitions, and a plot summary that students use as references as they scramble to answer the questions and move down the field toward victory.
