This great lesson plan collection includes 11 internet based activities/webquests covering major wars that America has been involved in from the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf War.

My students enjoy these webquests and have become very engaged in them. My students ask more questions and using the internet is always more exciting than reading from a textbook. Each webquest can take at least one class period to complete. Each of the webquests covers a war in great detail. A teacher answer key is included for 10 of the 11 webquests. (WWII Webquest Answer Key is not needed)

Tell us about yourself.
     I've been teaching for 24 years in an elementary setting though some of those years were out of the classroom. Those years reminded me how much I love the classroom. I have a wonderful husband and three amazing boys in their 20's and we live in Southern California. I recieved my Bachelors' from U.C.L.A. and my Masters' from C.S.U.F. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Instructional Technology. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Literacy: Reading, Language Arts. 

      I am proud to say I am a founding member of our school, Lucille Roybal-Allard ES. A team of fantastic educators worked for two years to write a plan to create the best educational environment they could think of and the district agreed with us and awarded the school to us. It's been challenging but rewarding starting our own school.  We are currently in our third year.

      Currently, I'm teaching fourth grade.


What do you like best about teaching?
     I love the creativity and the fun you can have with the kids. Kids are so open to learning new things and just trying. I love that about children.
     I also love the lightbulb moment. You know that moment, when a student has been struggling to get a concept and, all of a sudden, you can see that lightbulb turn on over their head and their eyes light up because they get it. I love that.


Describe your favorite TpT product.
     My favorite TpT product has to be my close reading guides. I love reading quality literature to my students as interactive read alouds and going further and using close reading to really go deep with the text. It's so important to have great open ended questions to use and that's how I designed my guides. 

      I use the story as an Interactive Read Aloud during Reader's Workshop. The language of the story helps me delve into comprehension, literary elements and genre. I use the questions I created in the close reading guide to help me "go deep" with the literature. Students turn and talk during this time and discuss their thinking. I also model how to annotate text, which students can do using the class read aloud or a book at their reading level during the workshop.
       Once a week we do a formal close read during our language arts time. That's when I use the formatted sheets in the close reading guide. Gradual release is the teaching method in which responsibility shifts from the teacher to the student. The "I do it, We do it, You do it together, You do it alone" model. The lesson is very explicit and scripted. Close reading can be focused on anything you like: figurative language, theme, character development, story elements etc..


What advice would you give to someone who may want to become a seller at Teachers Pay Teachers?
      Just go for it! Make a quality product and people will be thankful. A one of my colleagues recently said, "It's not that I can't make it. I just don't have the time." If you've already made something, just try putting it on TpT. You're probably helping someone else out!

     Oh, and go to the TPT conference in the summer!  I learned so much in one day.  I didn't know I was doing so much wrong!  Make the investment and go! You will learn a ton and meet great people.


What have you done or hope to do with your TpT earnings?
     I hope to help out my family and pay some bills! I don't make a ton but every little bit helps!

Banned Book Week -  September 21-27, 2014

Celebrate reading, writing and thinking while you hook your students into Banned Book Week. Here is an engaging product for you to use during this observance of the right to read, or any time during the school year. As students explore various facets of book censorship in schools, they will become more proficient in their reading, critical thinking and writing skills and will gain knowledge about this subject. Whether they choose to investigate the legal, historical, moral or societal aspects of this issue is up to each individual student and his/her personal interest in this topic.

In order to illustrate the points for book censorship in the schools, students will read a frequently banned or challenged novel, either from the included list, or a choice of their own. Next, they will research when, where and why it was challenged or banned. In the last part of the paper, each student will develop his/her opinion on whether the book should be banned or restricted, using points from the paper to support his/her conclusion. Students will follow the style sheet of the teacher’s choosing.

The three pages of Teachers Notes will help you customize this project for your students' skills, abilities and learning styles. 

Students are often shocked when they find out that some of their favorite books have been banned or restricted in schools. With this project, they can explore the Who, What, When, Where and Why so many popular texts read in schools have been challenged. A Parent Approval Form  where students get their parents' permission to read the book that they chose is included.

I've been a Texas educator for over 12 years. After 11 years in the classroom, I just accepted a position as a Mentor Teacher as part of a grant program in my school district. This position will give me more opportunities to learn, create, and share with my fellow teachers-- my passion! I am looking forward to the journey and its new challenges. 

Here's a little bit more about me: 

Experience: I have 11 years of experience teaching both upper elementary school and middle school mathematics. I also have one year of experience in campus leadership as an Assistant Principal. In addition, I have been a curriculum writer for a local community college. 

Teaching Style: I really like an active classroom. If you were to walk in, you would see my students engaged in hands-on activities, completing station activities, or working cooperatively. It truly is a "routty" (rowdy) classroom. 

Education History: I received a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education degree with a Mathematics Specialization from Baylor University in 2002. I received a Masters degree from The University of Texas at Austin in Curriculum and Instruction in 2005. Currently, I am working toward my Doctoral degree in Mathematics Education at Baylor University.

What do you like best about teaching?

The best part about being a teacher is watching the light bulb go on when I see a student finally make a connection and “get it.”

In addition, I am truly a problem solver. I completely view my role as a teacher through this lenses and I enjoy teaching my class with this perspective in mind-- from working with students to creating lessons. My classroom is very problem solving and inquiry based. My students are thinking all the time!

Describe your favorite TpT product.

Because I am a problem solver, my favorite TpT product is a problem solving guide that I created called "J.U.S.T.I.F.Y. Your Thinking- A Math Problem Solving Model". It really emphasizes the process that students need to use when they solve problems. I have had great success with it in the classroom at both the elementary and middle school level.

What advice would you give to someone who may want to become a seller at Teachers Pay Teachers?

I recently read in a seller’s book that she was a “Maker of Things”-- that’s what made her successful. I definitely think to be a seller, you have to have a creative viewpoint that you want to share. You truly have to be a “maker of things” in order to enjoy creating and selling for TpT. People can “see” that passion. The success will follow!

What have you done or hope to do with your TpT earnings?

At this point, my TpT earnings have been used to build my clipart library and create marketing materials for my consulting business. I’m a fairly new seller, less than two months, but see a real opportunity to share my creativity with a world of educators.

What do you like best about being a member of The Best of Teacher Entrepreneurs Marketing Cooperative?

For someone who is new to selling, I have been a buyer for some years, TBTEMC has given me exposure that I may not have otherwise gotten without this networking opportunity.

Wonder: Close Reading Guide

      Have you ever thought about ways to get your students to empathize with each other? I found Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It's a great book about differences, bullying and acceptance. I created this guide to examine the book using close reading techniques. The Common Core demands that students examine text, annotate, question and think. I love using literature to get students to think and question. It's all about going deep. Get to know August and his circle of family and friends. Another great thing about this book is that it is told from different perspectives at different points of the story. Nice way to introduce POV. I hope you love this book as much as I do.

I created a guide to a close reading guide for Wonder by RJ Palacio. It's a wonderful book chronicling Auggie's, a young boy born with a facial deformity, journey through school and the adjustments he, his family and his classmates have to make.

Close reading will be an integral part of teaching with the Common Core. Students need to know how to be analytic when reading texts and poems. I have outlined the components of authentic literacy and what it looks like in the classroom. I formatted the guide as follows. It begins with an explanation of close reading and how to format a lesson. Then, there is a story summary, themes listed and character descriptions. After that, I created focus questions for each chapter. There are explicit gradual release formatted lessons sprinkled throughout. I included a close reading sheet for each of the explicit lessons. You could use the focus questions to create more close reading lessons using the blank templates or for class discussions. At the end, there is a blank sheet for planning and to use with close reading of different chapters. I hope your students enjoy it as much as my students did. This isn't a bunch of worksheets as I don't teach that way. This is for going deep with the literature!

Sahara Special: Believing in All Students!

The book I'm reading as a read aloud to my class right now is Sahara Special by Esme Raji Codell. It's the first time I'm reading it and my class is LOVING it!

This book will make you (& your students) laugh out loud, gasp, become teary-eyed, and cheer for this heroine. Although at first it was difficult for many of my students to relate to Sahara’s tough neighborhood and type of kids, Ms. Codell writes in such a way that my class was quickly hooked into following the characters.

Sahara practically lives at the library after school, reading voraciously and writing her life story, Her Heart-Wrenching Life Story and Amazing Adventures, but she refuses to read, write, or do any work in school. So she is put in Special Ed and taunted by her classmates as Sahara Special.  By the end of fifth grade, her mother insists she be taken out of Special Ed and flunked if she is not doing her work.

So the next year, Sahara is back in a regular fifth grade class, and although she won't be Sahara "Special" anymore, she doesn't expect much to be different...until she meets the new 5th grade teacher, Miss Pointy. She is unlike any teacher the class has ever met! From her eggplant-colored lipstick, to her wacky clothes; think of a zanier version Mary Poppins meets Miss Frizzle (Magic School Bus series), Miss Pointy is different. And Sahara takes notice and begins to have hope that things WILL be different.

I know you & your students will love this book! Here's a freebie: a short little author study with Esme Raji Codell worksheet you can use with your class! I used it as students had independent work time; it has a QR code to get to her site. (Somehow being able to scan that made my students think it is so much fun!)

FREE MATH LESSON - “5.OA.1 Order of Operations Notes”

I've noticed over the years that students tend to have a difficult time keeping detailed, organized notes for math. It was alarming more so this year with the group that I had. We, as teachers, know how important an organized notebook is, even more so now that we have Common Core. I also noticed my students spent so much class time copying the steps to solve each problem and realized that I needed to do something to remedy this so that they would have more time to practice the new problems/strategies I was teaching them.

That is when the thought of creating CCSS aligned notes for math came from. 

This FREEBIE (though not for long), has student friendly notes and steps for solving 5.OA.1, order of operations. This 4 page document can be printed single or double sided and is a great resource for your students to place into their math notebooks or for you to keep a master binder of the CCSS strategies that your students can look back at as needed.

Math Games - "Number System Board Games - 6th, 7th and 8th Grades"

These games are fun for the students as they practice and review concepts taught in the Number System domain. Two to four students may play the game and an additional student may be used as the answer checker.

Students will draw a card, and they must correctly answer the question in order to move along the game board as they race to the finish space!
