Language Arts Lesson - "Words! Words! Words!"

Created by Dianne Mason

Grades 9-12

Help your students achieve a better vocabulary with the two lessons conveniently bundled in this package.

The activities in Build a Better Vocabulary will build higher-level vocabulary in your students. While designed for use in high school and college English classes, the activities can easily be adapted for middle school classrooms and for use in other disciplines. Effective vocabulary instruction involves building on the student’s prior knowledge, actively involving the student, and using repetition to reinforce learning. The activities in this lesson are designed to do all of those things. Most of the activities can be completed in about 15 minutes.

Included are a list of 375 SAT and GRE words, a brief history of the English language, and active links to helpful websites with other vocabulary activities.

Help your students understand the hidden power of connotations with the fun activities in Connotations: The Hidden Power of Words. Each one can be used as a separate mini-lesson, or they can be combined into a series of lessons. Completion of these exercises will enable students to identify connotation in literature and advertising as well as other media and to describe how connotation can be used in persuasion.

There are 7 activities in the package:
1. What’s in a Name?
2. Positive, Neutral, and Negative Synonyms
3. Name-Calling
4. Character Traits
5. Advertising Lingo
6. Writing Movie Reviews
7. Poetry: Using the Just-Right Word

Also included are 4 worksheets that can be used for further practice or as short quizzes. Each activity takes between 30 and 50 minutes to complete.

Thank you.
